Luke Shaw needed to be stretchered off the pitch after suffering a head injury playing for England against Spain at Wembley. The Manchester United full-back was playing his first match for England since being recalled to the squad by Gareth Southgate, and set Marcus Rashford up for the opener in the first half. But, Shaw’s night took a painful turn as he collided with Spain’s Dani Carvajal competing for the ball.
England Shaw’s head seemed to strike Carvajal’s body and the defender immediately went down and received treatment, including oxygen. England’s medical staff worked on Shaw for several minutes before it was elected the Englishman needed to be stretchered off. There is yet to be any official update on Shaw’s condition, but Sky Sports claim the 23-year-old was awake in the dressing and speaking to his family on the phone soon after being substituted.
That news will come as a relief to United fans who have been hugely impressed with Shaw this season. Shaw’s form earned him a spot in Southgate’s squad and Jose Mourinho was in attendance at Wembley watching his United stars in action.
