Which Tartelette palette? Amazonian Clay Toasted vs Bloom vs Matte. In depth review, functionality and ingredient lists

I’ve recently managed to get my hands on to some Tarte products and….where has Tarte been all my life?! Tarte has very minimal, almost not existent presence in the UK, but now you buy some of their products online, from the brand’s website.

I, of course, first tried their famous concealer and absolutely loved it. If you missed this post check out: Battle of the top 2 concealers – Urban Decay Naked Skin vs Tarte Shape Tape – A chemist’s verdict and ingredient analysis

I’ve also wanted to try their Tartelette eye shadow palettes but I really couldn’t decide which one to get and since Tarte doesn’t have a presence in the UK, I couldn’t go to a counter to see them either. So, I decided to do what any unreasonable beauty junkie would, to buy all three of them. I wish there was an article that compared them and gave an idea as to which is best or which to buy, so this post is what I would have been looking for. I hope it helps someone in a similar situation I was.

Which Tartelette should you choose? Are they all equally good and which one is worth your cash? How do the Tartelette toasted eyeshadow palette, Tartelette in bloom clay palette and the Tartelette Amazonian clay matte palette compare?

Here’s my verdict:

Packaging:

All three of them are gorgeous. They all come in a coated plastic packaging, which feels and looks like metal, with a different coloured design at the front to suit the colours and theme of the palette. All three of them are durable and will easily survive traveling. They all contain a big mirror too!

In terms of packing looks and look alone, I’d say that the Tartelette in bloom clay palette is the prettiest followed by the Tartelette Amazonian clay matte palette and lastly the Tartelette toasted eyeshadow palette which is also pretty nevertheless.

I should note here that there are another 2 Tartelette palettes (Tartelette tease clay palette and Tartelette flirt eyeshadow palette) which I am not mentioning here. They are smaller and not as popular either and so I am discounting them. Additionally, the colours they contain can be easily substituted with one or two of the bigger Tartelettes. They also contain less shadow colours but are half the price. However, the packaging is not as nice, as it is made of cardboard rather than a metallic looking case.

Contents:

All three palettes contain 12 colours that follow a theme. The Tartelette toasted eyeshadow palette has toasted colours, ie. different shades of brown-orange, the Tartelette in bloom clay palette has colder browns i.e. more natural shades and finally the Tartelette Amazonian clay matte palette contains a few shades of browns, a pink and a brown-purple.

The biggest difference really is in intensity, the toasted will give you the most intense colours and it reminds me a little of the Urban Decay Heat palette. If you missed that post check out: Urban Decay Naked Heat Eye Shadow Palette and Lipsticks! Swatches and Reviews on National Lipstick day!

The clay matte palette is the least intense one and is the only palette that contains all matte colours.

Pigmentation and texture:

I was impressed with the quality of these shadows. They are neither buttery creamy or powdery but they are closer to a buttery texture. Dare I say they are better than the Urban Decay eye shadows which up to now I considered to be the best!

They are all as pigmented as one would expect from the colours they are and neither of them are unreasonably patchy. Some of the darker colours, the dark browns and blacks, have a tiny bit of patchiness to them but nothing major. It is expected for deep colours to be a little patchy. Nevertheless, the little patchiness is not obvious when you blend with a brush on the eyes, only when you swatch by hand. As a result, it really isn’t a problem at all. Worse case scenario, just add a little more eye shadow over it. Similarly, the lighter colours (whites) can look a little chalky when swatched but are not chalky at all on the eyes.

None of the three palettes have any considerable kick back (meaning eye shadow powder coming of when you tap your brush).

The toasted palette has the most free loose powder around when you open it up but it also contains the highest amount of shimmers which means there will be more loose material around naturally. Even the slight kickback and loose powder that it had was within normal limits and is not really considered problematic or bad.

Colours:

I love the colours in all these palettes but this is a personal taste type of thing.

The toasted palette contains 12 colours of which 6 are shimmers and the rest 6 are matte. It has two colour options for setting your eye shadow primer, 4 options for transition colours, 4+ options for a main lid colour and 3+ options for shading. When I say 4+ it means that there’s 4 traditional lid colours (which are traditionally the lighter shimmer colours) but the plus means you could essentially use any colour you want as a lid colour so essentially it’s more than 4. There are even 3-4 colours you could use for a halo look.

The bloom palette contains 12 colours of which 3 are shimmers and the rest 9 are matte. It has 2 options for setting your eye shadow primer, 4 options for transition colours, 3+ options for a main lid colour and 4+ options for shading. There are also 2 colours you could use for a halo look.

Finally, the matte palette also contains 12 colours of which all 12 are matte. It has 3 colour options for setting your eye shadow primer, 4-5 options for transition colours, 12 options for a main lid colour and 6+ options for shading. It’s harder to create a halo look without a shimmer colour but you could use some of the lighter colours to achieve the effect.

Overall, these palettes can all stand alone and you can easily create a couple full looks without needing to use another palette.

Blendability:

All three palettes are of the same quality. They all blend very easily and effortlessly, even easier than the Urban Decay shadows. They feel soft and creamy on the skin so much so that you might not even feel the bristles of your brush. It just feels like a nice massage on the eyes, I could literally sit and blend these eye shadows for ages.

Longevity:

I always use the Urban Decay Original eye shadow primer under all my eye shadow looks and with that, these eye shadows last all day, do not crease and their colour only fades slightly which is normal.

Transfer proof tests:

These shadows do not come off if you simply touch them but they slowly fade if you rub them.

Quality:

The quality of these 3 Tartelette palettes is impressive. I own a fair amount of palettes and I actually think these are one of the best, if not the best. I actually think that the formulation of these shadows is better than the Urban Decay shadows which I always held as the highest shadow standard.

Price:

All three Tartelettes retail for £41 each which is within the normal eye shadow palette mark. The price is totally worth it considering the quality, as long as you like the colours, you won’t regret it. Money well spent.

Smell:

All three palettes have a yummy but subtle scent. They smell a little like light caramel to me but the ingredients reveal that they contain vanilla. My nose must be way off. Nevertheless, they are not sickly sweet but actually quite pleasant.

Other:

All three palettes last for 12M which is slightly short for an eye shadow palette. It would be nicer if you could keep a palette for 2 years but at least these are so good that you will want to use them up in no time.

Tarte is also a cruelty free brand and their products are vegan friendly, gluten free, hypoallergenic, formulated without soy and dermatologist tested. They also always formulate without parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate and gluten.

Ingredients:

Eye shadow palettes don’t often contain any “good for your skin” ingredients but rather just the ones required to create the formulation and pigmentation. As a result, I won’t spend much time here going over them. If there is an ingredient found in this palette that you’d rather avoid you’d likely have a hard time finding another palette you can use as most of the compounds contained are pretty standard.

All three palettes contain Vanilla Planifolia Fruit extract which not only smells nice but is a skin conditioner, skin smoother and can also act as a skin protector. It also contains anti-oxidants. They also contain Amazonian clay which apparently helps with making the looks last longer.

In case you missed my previous post on the Urban Decay Backtalk palette, I would like to quickly address the ingredient talc. There is much speculation out there on the safety of talc. As a chemist I can tell you that there is no scientific proof that talc is harmful, I will go through this in detail in another post. Talc is classed as a skin irritant on its Material Safety Data Sheet (aka MSDS) however, so is table or cooking salt also known as sodium chloride and….we eat it. Pretty much almost everything can be classed as a skin irritant, especially to those with sensitive skin and these labels are very loosely defined. If you use it and you don’t get skin irritation, then there is no reason to worry. The only time when talc can be dangerous to health is if it is breathed in, in large quantities, as a free powder. So…don’t mash up this palette and breath it in.

Same goes for silica, it is only dangerous in free powder form, if you breath it in and if it’s in large quantities or repeated breathing in exposure.

You can find a list of all ingredients at the end of this post.

Verdict:

I absolutely love these palettes. The quality is top notch and very impressive. I highly recommend all three of them.

Which palette should you get:

If you are looking for an intense summer heated look then the toasted palette is the best choice. If you are looking for more subtle, but still pigmented, every day look then the bloom is the best choice. Unfortunately, I think that the matte palette is the least valuable. I see it more as an addon palette, containing lots of nice transition and blending colours but not as a palette that would create a lot of nice looks on its own. So, forget about the matte and decide between the toasted and the bloom, on the basis of stronger or more subtle brown looks. Or get both!

If you can only afford one go for the bloom as it is more easily wearable, even for everyday or professional looks, whereas the toasted can create some bold looks that might be more summer seasonal and not all of us can pull those off as easily.
