Awesome Benefits Of Playing Board Games With Your Kids

Children’s Board Games have changed a lot since I was a kid – and let’s be honest, it’s just as well. Playing computer games can be hugely beneficial for children, but it also has its disadvantages – addiction to technology is a very real and dangerous thing.

However, one of the offshoot benefits of the impact of computer and console gaming is that Board games have had to adapt to survive. And it’s fair to say that they have had something of a resurgence in the past few years.

Playing these board games with your kids has some incredible benefits – everything they can get from a computer, and a lot more besides. Here are some excellent reasons for playing more on a board, rather than a console.

Active minds

First and foremost, Playing Board Games can help develop a whole bunch of skills in your child. It’s brain workout, and concepts like strategy, planning, and skill can all be enhanced. It’s also perfect for math development – totting up the numbers on a metal dice will soon become an easy task for them.

Taking turns

Any parent of toddlers will know about their sheer inability to wait until it is their turn. Whether it’s in a playful environment or even just a conversation, a toddler just cannot stop themselves from interrupting or demanding their needs are met right away. Board games can help them learn to restrain themselves a little, and are a great way of teaching them to wait their turn.

Thinking one step ahead

Board games for slightly older children require them to think seriously about what they are doing – often planning two or three moves in advance. Chess is the perfect example – and children are quick to grasp that it is a combination of steps rather than a single move that will bring them victory.

Some children understand consequences more than others – and it’s why so many of them act heedlessly, despite constant warnings from frustrated parents! But the whole point of a board game is that every action you take will have a consequence – whether positive or negative. With a little help from the parents, any child can start to learn about consequence. It will set them up to make better choices as they get older.

There are plenty of board games out there that are cooperative – and they are perfect for helping teach children about teamwork. If you are looking for the perfect way of halting arguments and fights around the house, you would be hard-pressed to find a better solution than buying a game like The Secret Door.

Sporting behavior

Of course, the vast majority of board games will pit your children against each other. There will be one winner – and everyone else loses. While it can be tough for young kids to take, it’s a fun way of introducing the complicated concept of losing and being a good sport. As they get older, children will start to realize the value of playing and taking part, rather than always wanting to win.
