I AM LOOKING FOR THE GARDENER

Here’s today’s Gospel reading together with a painting and a poem for your reflection as you simmer and bask in Easter Joy.

John 20:11-18

I am looking for that gardener
In the garden by the grave

With overalls, hat and
Hoe in his hands

The Pretender,
Fooling everyone,
Especially the Magdalene

The Saviour with a hoe,
Head down, contented,
A knowing smile embracing all of us

And everything,
With mind and heart bursting

The technicolour dreamer,
Of dreams we never dared

I am looking for that gardener
In the garden by the grave

Wanting him to stop a while,
Wipe his brow,
Lean on his hoe
And talk to me

Of plants and things,
Life and Spring,
Of tossed-aside stones
In front of non-final resting places

Of tables and crosses,
Of wounds that heal,
With time and resurrections

I am looking for that gardener
In Easter gardens everywhere

The gardener with the passion
And the kindness in his eyes,
And with oh so many stories to tell

The one who was a carpenter,
Story teller,
Truth teller,
Tiller of soil
And breaker of frozenhard winterground

The waited for, yet unexpected one,
The gardener,

The creator of the blooming

I am looking for that gardener
In the garden by the grave.

Poem: I am Looking for the Gardener by Chuck Lathrop

Painting: Noli me Tangere, by Graham Sutherland, tucked away in Chichester Cathedral
