Frank died. His feet went first. Falling. He was falling down, down, down, and stopped right in the middle of a wild orgy. There were couches, cushions, and beanbag chairs all over a mirrored floor. People were all over each other — young, old, fat, fit, wild-haired and crazy-eyed, they were falling from one spot to another, into one another, drooling and sweating.

Frank died. He stood up out of the cold dirt. It was dark. He felt around himself and placed his hand on something knobby. A tree. He held it there, waiting for his eyes to adjust. His hand slipped. Something broke. A scream cracked the dark air. Frank leaped away. The scream became a moan. The moan became sobs. Then, silence. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”

Frank died. The table was set. His son sat across, a blue-eyed, sandy-haired boy of four. He looked up from his chicken. His wife, Sara, sat to Frank’s left. Frank smiled; she was wearing a blue dress. “Can you pass the potatoes?” Frank asked across the table. “Why did you let them take me?” the boy asked. Frank pointed to the potatoes. Then stopped. He looked at the boy again. The boy’s face was slack.

Frank died. Years passed. The end times got around to themselves. A hand burst out of the ground. It was Frank’s hand. He groaned. He emerged from the grave, rife with dirt and maggots. He wanted to brush himself off but only walked. He walked slowly. It gave him time to think. His first thought in many years was, “Buildings. Tall.” And they were.
