Don’t let the opening Santa scene and title lead you to believe that Reindeer Games (2000) is a Christmas movie. Prisoner Rudy Duncan (Ben Affleck) assumes the identity of his dead bunkmate Nick Cassidy (James Frain) when he gets out so he can hook up with Ashley (Charlize Theron), the woman who was writing Cassidy romantic letters. Because “Cassidy” used to work for a casino, Ashley’s psychopathic brother Gabriel (Gary Sinise) decides he will help them rob it, despite the fact Gabriel has only ever committed petty crimes. Through the whole sting, Rudy tries to keep his cover and bluffs his knowledge of the casino to help a group of unqualified cons manage the biggest score of their lives.
The film was directed by John Frankenheimer and the screenplay was written by Ehren Kruger.
This is one of those movies with a lot of twists and turns to keep you interested. If you love dramas, it’s a good one. It is well casted and Sinise plays crazy to perfection. I give this 3.5 stars out of five.
