My honest review of HK’s best outdoor specialists & their equipment

I’d been laying in the pitch black of my tent for maybe twenty minutes when the complete quiet of this remote little site was suddenly shattered by a tumultuous roar. All around, canvas shook, as a thousand fingers simultaneously tapped on all its sides.

Awaking from my semi-sleep, I was surprised and concerned to find I had somehow wet the sleeping bag – thankfully not around the crutch – but at the bottom.

After a decade of use, our MSR tent was proving itself no longer capable of handling tropical rain. Huddling myself and the most important of my belongings into the center of a shrinking dry patch, I determined it definitely time to purchase a new tent…

Finding the right tent in Hong Kong

We traipsed around a few the biggest Outdoor Specialists, feeling generally unimpressed with the selection of tents on offer and low standard of shop service.

That was until we met RC Outfitters’ outdoor Specialist, and all-around superstar, Raymond Chow. This guy is an absolute blast – very knowledgeable, friendly, and funny!

If you’re shopping for camping equipment, hiking aides, survival gear, energy bars, or outdoor clothing, head to the below address in Mong Kok and speak to Raymond (don’t forget, Intrepidlee subscribers receive 15% discount).

RC Outfitters Mong Kok Address; 6/F, Oriental House, 24-26 Argyle Street, Mong Kok

Other locations; Causeway Bay, Yuen Long, Kowloon Bay, Tsuen Wan, Sha Tin.

Top Tip; the store which Raymond works at is tucked in an alleyway right beside Mong Kok MTR exit D3.

Kaleigh and I happily purchased the ‘camping deluxe set for two‘ (with mats, pillows, groundsheet, & tent – for $1899HDK) and have successfully been using everything very frequently over the past year.

The hammock attic (top) is great for satisfying storage needs, and its USB powered lights are a game changer!

Designed to keep you comfortable in the summer, warm through winter, and dry in a monsoon.

It’s even lighter than our MSR while being a wider inside but with a little less headroom.

A huge pro for us has been the ‘hammock attic’ (photo beside) which is rimmed with Led’s that shed the perfect light for card games on gloomy nights.

A slight con is that the pegs, which need hammering into the ground, have deteriorated and bent after a LOT of use during our first year. However, new and stronger pegs are very cheap/worth keeping spares of anyway.

Top tip: The pillows and mats (which came with our bundle) make the world of difference in sleep comfort levels (or even when lying out in the sun).
