Vacheron Constantin Historiques Cornes De Vache 1955 Limited Edition Watches Launched To Be Sold Exclusively Via an eight Year Old Online Watch Magazine

The 262 year old and one of the most expensive watch brands, Vacheron Constantin, has partnered with an eight year old US-based watch blog Hodinkee to retail its Historiques Cornes De Vache 1955 Limited Edition crafted in steel.

For having an understanding Vacheron Constantin’s Cornes De Vache watches and why the brand launched a new iteration of its vintage inspired timepiece let me take you to a flashback!

The Origin Of Cornes de Vache

It was in 2015 when watch collectors and enthusiasts were fascinated by the maison’s vintage inspired Chronograph, the Vacheron Constantin Historiques Cornes de Vache 1955 crafted in polished platinum.

The vintage watch that inspired the launch of Cornes de Vache in 2015 was Ref. 6087, as the watch was simply called then, and only limited timepieces were crafted beginning 1955. Informally, the novelty was called by the name of “Cornes de Vache” which in French means Cow Horns!

You might be wondering about the reference of cow horns and its relevance to a luxury timepiece? This elegant French name refers to the lugs, the two extended portions that attach the bracelet or the strap to the watch case, bearing resemblance to the horns of a cow and gave quite a distinguished and charismatic look to the watch.

What makes the timepiece extremely rare and desirable by the watch collectors is that it was the brand’s only vintage manually-wound Chronograph considered to be water resistant way back then.

And such an acclaim was the result of screw-on caseback, having the case-back screwed on to the main body using a rubber gasket to fill the space between two mating surfaces, instead of fitting screws on each of the four corners at the back of the watch case.

After the launch of the platinum Cornes de Vache in 2015, a rose gold model of the watch made its way in the year 2016. Again the rose gold model retained its original charm with reference to the strong tear drop lug proportions, classic engineering and a beautiful classic dial and watch case.

However, the most alluring feature of the Cornes de Vache timepieces has been the manually-wound chronograph movement, Caliber 1142.

This movement is based on one of the most admired movements in watchmaking – Lemania 2310. The movement is a column wheel design that makes a complexity of wheels and levers work together to control and synchronize the operations of the chronograph mechanism within the watch.

Finally, with the intent of going digital to reach out to new and a younger clientele, Vacheron Contantin has collaborated with Hodinkee, the celebrated modern and vintage wristwatch blog headquartered in New York, to launch Cornes de Vache iteration but this time around in a stainless steel case.

Leading to a third stint of the Cornes de Vasches, this Limited Edition watch now has been introduced with a stainless steel case and has a stunning grey opaline dial featuring a graduated pulsation scale.

The watch is powered by Vacheron caliber 1142 manually-wound chronograph movement that takes the basic engineering traits from one of the most celebrated movements in the watchmaking past – Lemania 2310.

The most recent version of this classic movement not only incorporates a high frequency balance (oscillating at the rate of 3 Hz) and aesthetic embellishments like the iconic Maltese Cross on the Column Wheel, but is also certified by The Geneva Hallmark (not just the movement but the entire watch).

It’s worth mentioning how Vacheron took Lemania 2310 and considerably modified the movement to design and develop Caliber 1142 to meet the stringent Hallmark of Geneva criteria.

The impressive mechanism of the Vacheron Caliber 1142 wound chronograph movement can be viewed by turning the watch case upside down and looking through the transparent screw-down caseback. At 38.5mm in diameter and just 10.9mm thick, the watch feels and looks wonderful on the wrist.

But why it was concluded to come up with a new iteration of Cornes de Vache? Apart from 6087, the other two well known chronographs of Vacheron Constantin belonging to the mid century – the 4072 and 4178 – were made in stainless steel during their lifetime.

But 6087 came only in gold, rose-gold and platinum. Plus the horological history associated with such a subtle timepiece – Vacheron’s only mid-century waterproof chronograph, showcasing a screw caseback and round pushers.

The watch looks beautiful when worn on the wrist. With 38.5mm in diameter and just 10.9mm thick steel case, the Cornes de Vache houses the most mechanically beautiful movements in watchmaking. Needless to say, it’s the Chronograph!

The gorgeous curved lugs attach the grey opaline dial, which changes color based on the light, to the especially hand-made straps that come in three variants: a Vacheron matte grey alligator strap, a HODINKEE natural Barenia calfskin strap, and a textured light grey calfskin strap.

The grey opaline dial that features a graduated pulsation scale in order to give a new purpose to the watch, also retains running seconds at nine o’clock and 30-minute counter at three o’clock.

And all thanks to the sapphire screw-down caseback and round pump pushers which make the watch water resistant to 30 meters.

Certainly, the Historiques Cornes de Vache 1955 Limited Edition timepiece in stainless steel is a novelty that was not been offered so far and is crafted for those who have an inclination and draw towards vintage timepieces redefined so beautifully.

And this beauty is priced at $45,000 and is just limited to just 36 pieces. This is not the first time when Hodinkee collaborated with a brand to come up with novelties for its loyal readers. Its earlier collaborations were for the timepieces like the MB&F LM101 Limited Edition for Hodinkee, the NOMOS Glashütte Metro Chronometer Limited Edition for HODINKEE and the Zenith El Primero Classic for Hodinkee.
