The Golden Age of Commercials

One particular topic I’ve always been interested in is advertising.

I love a good commercial and I seriously hate a bad one. It’s always intrigued me how a business can either capture your attention or completely alienate you over the course of a minute or less.

The internet age and social media have spawned a new generation of commercials.
The distribution of video content is controlled, in part, as it used to be: by money.
With a big enough budget your video can reach virtually everyone online.

However, what’s unique to this generation is that, even without a big budget, a video can reach a massive audience if it compels users to share.
Everyone knows what a viral video is. Brands are desperate to go viral – reaching everyone across the globe, crossing cultural and language barriers.

As a result, we see brands desperately trying to create “share-worthy” viral content. And some of them do a great job.
Although there is no clear-cut formula for a viral video, but they tend to to be shocking, raunchy or unbelievably cute. Or maybe even a combination of all 3 – whatever it takes to get draw laughs and shares from a viewer.

I like that brands are willing to create edgier content,  but it can’t be edgy for the sake of being edgy – it’s got to somehow be creative and inspired. But most importantly an advertisement should be clear about its message – unashamed and completely confident of what the company is selling.
