There are some rumors on the Internet and even analysts are waiting to see if Microsoft will acquire new names in the business this year. And if EA, Valve and PUBG Corp are really going to be bought out, then we’re surely going to see some Xbox One exclusives in the future.
At the moment, the rumors haven’t been confirmed, but even though it’s true or not, EA stocks jumped by 2.13% lately, so it’s a hint.
According to the polygon.com report, a ‘reliable source close to Microsoft’ has some inside information with an eventual acquisition. However, none of the previously mentioned companies came into discussion.
The latest acquisition was PlayFab, and in the official blog post, Microsoft presents their new partner as a backend platform provider for cloud-based gaming. Before the official announcement, Joost van Dreunen, with the SuperData Research said that they were expecting Microsoft to announce something in short time. It seems that it was the acquisition of PlayFab.
Another important factor that Van Dreunen thinks Microsoft will consider is Sony’s aggressive advances with the PlayStation 4, giving the ‘impression that Microsoft’s exclusives portfolio is pretty meager’.
It’s unthinkable to hear that EA or other big names could be acquired by Microsoft. But that reliable and close source to Microsoft said that Electronic Arts might be one of the names. Also, Valve and PUBG Corp were said to be next in line. Last year, Microsoft signed a timed exclusive for the game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
Since Spencer got promoted to executive vice president, we expect video games to become a part of the company’s strategy.
Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO is also enthused about games and Xbox, and looking at 2014, when they purchased the $2.5 billion Mojang (Minecraft developer), it’s likely they’re planning to acquire more important names in the future.
