According to the Metropolitan Police, 300 Range Rover and 63 BMW X5 and 3 Series models have been stolen in the last 4 months using a Remote Entry key re-programming technique.
Thieves are using hi tech Hand Held devices to re program keyless entry vehicles. A spokesman for Jaguar Land Rover said that the re programming of remote entry keys was an on-going problem for the entire motor industry.
This follows a Watchdog program which also shows CCTV footage of a BMW being entered and driven away using a similar hand held key re-programming device.
At the time this information was published within Car Dealer magazine – it was also confirmed by Brighton police that 10 prestige vehicles had also been stolen using these techniques.
Clearly if looked at on a national scale, this problem is more significant than these localised figures suggest.
If you have not already done so – consider protecting your vehicle with some form of Gap Insurance, without it you may be exposed to considerable financial risk if theft or indeed and accident should result in a write off.
