Happy New Year, my lovely pals! I hope everyone had the most magical winter break filled with love, laughter, and memory making. I am so excited for what’s to come in 2017! I can just feel that it’ll be a year full of opportunity. However, I think one thing everyone starts out the new year knowing, but quickly forgetting is that opportunity rarely just falls in our laps. I think that was one of the things that held me back from doing the things I wanted to in 2016 and I plan to not let myself Fall back into that bad habit! We all need to remember that everything starts with you. You are the one that gets yourself out of bed every morning. Who determines how the day will be and what it will be filled with. Make it a point to fill it with at least one thing that’ll get you to where you want to be. And leave out all of the things that won’t be of any benefit to you.
Something that I know to be true is that it’s hard for people to get back into their everyday routines in the new year after such a long, lackadaisical break. If you find it quite easy to wake up at 6:30 am again, sit through classes, and jump back into your real life, you’re lying. Or you’re just a freak of a human being. I know that is not the case for most people, including me! However, I’ve noticed that there are things I can do to get myself back into the swing of things without feeling miserable or stressed out. The key, like I mentioned previously, is to keep in mind that everything starts with you. Especially when it comes to physical and mental wellness.
get a good night sleep
I remember always being told during exam week in high school to “go to bed early” & “get a good night sleep” the night before an exam. Of course, I never listened and would go to bed at my usual time of midnight. However, now I understand how this is helpful. Your body is probably so out of whack, sleep-deprived, and just worn out from all the holiday festivities and vacations; so, ensuring that you rest it before heading back into work or class is paramount for your energy and a clear headspace the following day.
Not only do I suggest eating a healthy, sustainable, and energizing breakfast, but I think it’s important to eat something that you love, too. You might not be a person who genuinely feels joy from delicious food, but I am and I would guess that 9/10 people are too, lol. So, if blueberry and banana pancakes are your jam, have them the morning of your first day back! It’s important to do things that’ll put you in a good mood and bring you joy, especially the first day you start your routine again. I know lots of people don’t want the break to end and need a little something to boost their spirits! SO HAVE THE DAMN PANCAKES.
keep a planner
You might find keeping up with a Planner to be difficult, but you should at least start out the year using one. I know figuring out how to deal with work load again after not doing so for so long is what I struggle with. I believe that using your planner to keep track and stay on top of meetings, plans, and due dates will set you up for success right off the bat. It’ll force you to have no excuse for “forgetting an assignment is due” or “not knowing about work meetings.” And it also leads into my next point…
One of the worst things to fall into is procrastination. I’m not going to act like I don’t fall prey to it here and there, but if you’re someone who finds themselves always working on projects the night before the deadline, you need to make it a point to change that. If you start out the new semester or work year staying on top of work and getting them done in a timely and efficient manner, you’re more likely to keep up with it.
For people who don’t Workout regularly, getting yourself to start working out is a struggle. Even for people who regularly workout, getting back into the gym after the holidays isn’t easy, either. Although, the only way you’re going to jump back into it is by forcing yourself to go. This doesn’t meant that once you get there you have to have this killer workout and be dripping in sweat by the time you leave; you can literally go and just walk on the treadmill or stretch. But by bringing yourself to the gym, you’re getting back into that habit of going. If you put it off, you’ll never do it.
Make to-do lists
Write them in the notes app or reminders app on your phone, write them on paper, on a napkin, write them in your planner; wherever. Make to-do lists. Writing down all of the things I have to do for the day has helped me to both relieve the stress in my head by transferring it onto paper, and to get my stuff done. You’re bound to forget something you have to do if you keep it in your head. To-do lists are one of the best ways to stay prepared for school and work.
