Stock Markets edge higher, U.S. futures trade flat…

Most European indices trade higher today as oil continues to plunge. Indicatively, Germany’s DAX added 0.4 percent to last trade at 10639.0 as of 11:35 GMT, France’s CAC advanced 0.6 percent at 4445.50 and Euro Stoxx 50 added 0.7 percent at 3014.00. U.K.’s FTSE retreated however, losing 0.2 percent to last trade at 6856.90 as of 11:35 GMT.

U.S. Futures point to a flat start with all major indices futures trading flat. The Dow 30 futures added 4 points to last trade at 18532.0, the S&P was virtually unchanged at 2186.00 while Nasdaq futures were last seen trading at 4819.25 having barely added 2 points as of 11:37 GMT.

In other important news, Tesla shares could see higher-than-normal volumes today after it unveiled a new battery that it says will allow its Model S to go from 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds, making it the fastest production car in the world. As for economic reports, the U.S. National Association of Realtors will release fresh July data on existing homes sales at 14:30 GMT. The U.S. Energy Information Administration is also reporting weekly crude oil inventory data at 14:30 GMT.

It is important to note that this report can have a big influence on the direction of oil prices if there’s more or less inventory than expected.

There has been a better-than-expected demand for Samsung’s new phablet, Galaxy Note7 causing the South Korean company to delay the launch of the premium smartphone in some markets. The demand for the large-screen “phablet” follows good reviews since it was launched last Friday in the U.S., South Korea and other countries. The strong rise orders encapsulate Samsung’s recovery in the smartphone market following two years of struggle.

6.2 Earthquake hits Italy, Milan futures unavailable

A deadly earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale has struck central Italy. The earthquake was accompanied by strong aftershocks and it brought down buildings while killing what are believed to be at least 21 people. The disaster has wrought major damage to several towns and villages, but major population areas seem to have been spared from serious harm. However, an unknown number of people are trapped beneath rubble.
