When people think about their health, they often tend to think that oils and fats are something they should avoid. The truth is, there are good fats and bad fats. A complete avoidance of consuming oils and fats may just do more harm than good for your health. If you find the need, a fish oil dietary supplement may help you.

The Fish Oil Truth

To maintain a healthy life, essential fatty acids should be a part of your daily diet. When talking about essential fatty acids, there are two families, omega-3 and omega-6.

Even though there are only very slight differences between the two, their impacts on health are very different.  This is especially true because of the way we consume one more than the other.

The Unbalance of Omega-3 and Omega-6

Scientists and physicians are of the same opinion that a leading cause behind the increase in such things as obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, premature aging, and certain types of cancers is because of the imbalanced consumption of omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs.

Studies show that most diets consume too much omega-6 EFAs. This unbalance of EFAs can cause blood clotting, tumor growth, and inflammation.

The reason for the imbalance is omega-6 can be found in many of the unhealthy foods that the American diet loves so much. Foods like potato chips, pizza, processed meats, some pasta dishes, sausages, and salad dressings, is where you can find omega-6 EFAs

Also, many of the common vegetable oils used is a place you can find omega-6 EFAs. Such oils like, soy, sunflower, and corn oil, have high linoleic acid amounts.

You can find omega-3 EFAs on the other hand, in walnut and flaxseed oils, and also in marine plankton. You can also find omega-3 in nuts such as cashews, hazelnuts, walnuts, chia, Brazil nuts. Green leafy vegetables are also a good source of omega-3 EFAs.

Fish oil and fatty fish contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), fatty acids that may provide many benefits to the human body.

In the early 1970’s there was a study performed on the Greenland Eskimos. It showed that a major reason why they rarely suffered from heart disease was because of their high-fat diet (mostly of fish).

The two essential fatty acids, DHA and EPA, may also play a role in the preventing of depression, heart attacks, atherosclerosis, and some types of cancer. Supplementing with fish oil has also been shown to help treat illnesses like diabetes, ulcerative colitis, Raynaud’s disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Other Fish Oil Benefits

A fish oil dietary supplement has been proven to be beneficial for many other situations and illnesses.

Healthier Heart – The heart is undoubtedly one of the most important parts of our bodies. It is crucial to our lifespan so we must keep it healthy and functioning properly. Eating foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids is one way we can keep our hearts strong.

A study was done in Athens, Greece, to show if there was a direct connection between inflammation of blood vessels and a high fish diet. The results showed that those who consumed more fish than the others had a lower level of interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein, factors that are used to measure the possibility of blood vessel inflammation.

Obesity – A study done in Perth, Australia showed that consuming fish can be helpful in fighting obesity and hypertension. A discovery by the researchers of the University of Western Australia was a diet that is quite effective in improving glucose tolerance and the lowering of blood pressure. This weight-loss diet includes a regular amount of fish consumption.

Asthma – A common misconception of people with respiratory problems, like asthma, is that they are unhealthy and unfit. There are certain studies that have now revealed the benefits of fish oil for people who suffer from asthma. According to statistics, about 20 to 25% of children today at some time in their lives, will suffer from some form of asthma. A regular diet that consisted of food that was high in linoleic acid, may be a big reason for this.

A study was performed by the researchers of the University of Wyoming that gave a number of children a diet high in fish while the other children ate their regular diet. Results showed the children who were eating more fish had the ability to breathe easier and had less asthma attacks.

Final Thoughts

Remember, having an imbalance of omega-3 EFAs and omega-6 EFAs may lead to some unwanted health problems.

Always consult your physician on whether a fish oil dietary supplement is right for you. It is never a good idea to consume or used anything in excess, but a avoiding a certain food type completely can be just as harmful. Speak to your physician or nutritionist about what would be the right amount of fish intake for your health status and age.
