A 17-year-old girl is dead and a 16-year-old boy is in critical condition in hospital following two shootings in London in the space of one hour.
Police were called to an incident in Tottenham at 9.35pm on Monday and found Tanesha Melbourne-Blake with a gunshot wound in her upper body. She was pronounced dead at the scene. According to a woman who knew Tanesha, the teenager was Shot by a gunman in a moving car while she was in the street with a group of friends.
The woman said Tanesha was “just chilling with her friends” when she was shot from a car for “no reason at all” in Chalgrove Road, a residential street near Northumberland Park station.
“The car just pulled up and just started shooting,” said the 21-year-old friend, who did not want to be named. She said she heard the gunshots “like fireworks” from her house.
She said that Tanesha’s mother arrived before paramedics, adding: “She was screaming. She didn’t know what to do.”
“She didn’t deserve that. Her mum didn’t deserve to watch her die,” she said. She described the victim as a “good girl”, adding: “She was so lovely.”
The 21-year-old witness said that she had been unable to help Tanesha.
“Her friend came banging on my door so I came out quickly,” she said. “I even tried to save her – had to, had to.”
She said the gunshot wound, below the victim’s breast, was not immediately visible and it looked like she was “having a fit”.
She said: “I put her on her side and I was just rubbing her back, saying ‘everything’s going to be OK’. I just can’t believe it – so young. It’s ridiculous now.”
A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said paramedics had worked to save the girl but she was pronounced dead at 10.43pm.
“Her next of kin are aware and a crime scene is in place. No arrests have been made at this stage,” she said.
Less than an hour after Tanesha was shot, officers were alerted to another shooting about two miles away in Walthamstow, east London, where they found a 16-year-old boy with gunshot injuries and a 15-year-old boy with stab wounds.
The 16-year-old boy who was shot in the Markhouse Road area of Walthamstow was taken to a hospital in east London where he remains in a critical condition. The other boy who was stabbed was also being treated in hospital. Scotland Yard said the stabbed 15-year-old boy has life-changing but not life-threatening injuries.
Both attacks come amid concerns over rising violent crime in London. Police say the shootings are not linked.
Detectives from Scotland yard’s homicide command are investigating the possibility that the killing was linked to a feud between gangs in Tottenham and Wood Green. Local sources believe the attack was connected to the feud, which has seen a youngster shot in Tottenham, and then another shot and killed outside the Wood Green Vue cinema. That was followed the next day by what is believed to be a reprisal stabbing outside a north London sixth form centre.
There have been no arrests in either investigation.
