How to get from Champey to Guatemala City to Antigua
If you are staying in Champey you must first get to Lanquin which is 25 min away. You can easly hitchhike or pay 10Q for a shuttle.
From Lanquin to Coban local buses leave hourly from Coban where you must change to go to Guatemala/Antigua. The journey from Lanquin to Coban costs Q30 and takes about 2.5h.
From Coban to Guatemala City you need to walk to the Monja bus station and take the bus to Guatemala City which will cost Q50.
I highly recommend walking through Coban. This area of Coban is purely local and covered with street trade and markets. IT is also a great place to buy your snacks for the trip such as plantain chips, fruit sticks, corn on the cob…
Arriving in Guatemala
The bus departs at a shoping center which is not near Guatemala Center. You will have to take a bus into Guatemala Center where I presume you will be staying. The blue busses in Guatemala City require you to have a bus pass. You can easilly bypass this and ask the conductor or a kind civilian (in my case) to allow you to use their pass and you pay them the Q3 fare in cash. Don’t be shy, this is normal. The bus will terminate in zone 1 of Guatemala, hooray you made it to the city center!
Guatemala City to Antigua by local chicken bus
Shuttles to Antigua from Guatemala City cost between Q70 to Q150 depending on how much they want to rip you off. The local chicken bus costs Q10
First you must take the metro, line 2 to Santa Cecilia. It costs 1Q and the turnstiles are never activated so you can put 25cents into it and be on your way, it makes no difference as you don’t need a ticket. This journey takes 10 minutes
This is a great way to see the city. I advise you go around 11am when the streets are busy and fresh! And get a window seat or view because there is so much to see! p.s. the metro gets PACKED.
From Santa Cecilia exit the station to the right hand side of the street. It is a huge huge road… Walk straight along until you approach the major right turn. Walk down this street and keep on walking until you see plenty of Chicken Buses lined up. Ask, or better wait until you hear people shouting “Antigua!” and enter the bus. Mine was red. IT will cost Q10 from Guatemala City to Antigua. The journey takes 1h, more or less depending on the traffic.
