Toronto is the center of the sneaker world this weekend and we’ve got our thoughts on the biggest releases in this edition of Buy, Pass, Wait. If you are in Six at the moment, we wish you all the best as you try navigate through all the parties and events that will be taking place.
Nike Air Foamposite One Northern Lights
Juan Martinez, Editor-In-Chief: (PASS) You know what’s barely seen in Toronto? The actual Northern Lights. Regardless of the cultural confusion, it’s a meh colorway that gets slightly elevated because of it’s an All-Star Shoe. It will retain a certain value, but I don’t see it as the next Galaxy. I don’t even think it’s on par with last year’s Mirror colorway.
Todd Krevanchi, Features: (PASS) I’m not a fan of the Foam silhouette and I seriously think they’re saturating the landscape with colorways that are real stretches.
Renz Ofiaza, News: (WAIT) I admire the silhouette a lot. It’s one of my favorite basketball silhouettes, but I’m not really feeling it in this colorway. The execution is solid but I wouldn’t purchase it at retail.
Juan Carrillo, News: (PASS) I really like the theme behind the shoe. Only problem is, I can’t stand the actual shoe. The Northern Lights theme on all these sneakers is perfect for All Star Weekend, but there’s really nothing you can do to a shoe I don’t like to begin with to make me change my mind about it. That price tag is disgusting too.
Andres Carrillo, News: (PASS) I’ll admit that the shoe looks better as more and more images have released, but I’m just not a fan of Foams and that $250 price tag is just crazy.
Air Jordan 4 White/Cement Retro 89
EIC Juan: (PASS) Because I had a chance to buy them on Wednesday night and I didn’t because it would have just been trade bait for something else. It’s an iconic shoe in one of its most beloved colorways and despite the chatter online about the quality on both sides, I would advise anybody who genuinely wants a pair to go ahead and buy them.
Todd: (BUY) This is the greatest shoe of all time. Any time you have a chance to acquire the greatest anything of all time, you have to. That is all…
Renz: (BUY) I’ve always wanted a pair. I’ve waited too long and finally, it’s releasing.
News Juan: (PASS but barely…) It’s taking all the willpower inside of me to Pass up on these. I have the 2012 release and as much as I’d like a fresh new pair, my current pair is still in great condition. Plus, the Nike branding on the heel is not enough to make me want to spend $220 on another pair of retros.
Andres: (BUY) Possibly my favorite Air Jordan of all-time. I know that I’ll regret it down the line if I pass on these so I just can’t watch them go by. I’m already calling it, my favorite Air Jordan release of 2016!
Air Jordan 10 OVO Black
EIC Juan: (PASS) Drop the OVO 12s already, Aubrey.
Todd: (PASS) While I’ve always loved the X in its original colorway and a few other retro CWs, I would not go out of my way to buy any of the OVO iterations thus far.
Renz: (BUY) I like the tonal finish overall and it being a collaboration is a plus. Not that it’s the main reason why I like it. Obviously it has a higher resale value, haha.
News Juan: (PASS) Not a big fan of the 10s or Drizzy Drake. The only reason I would pick these up is to flip them and get me a pair of Air Jordan 1 High OG Chicagos. Buy them to actually wear them though, Nah, I’m good.
Andres: (BUY) If you have the opportunity to buy a pair for retail then I say go for it. I mean if you don’t like them that much you can always resell them and make a nice chunk of change. Say what you will, but I’m willing to bet that at least 50% of the people who buy this shoe will do so with the intention to resell it.
Capsule x Reebok Question
EIC Juan: (BUY) For the second year in a row, Reebok might lowkey have the best selection of kicks for All-Star Weekend. I was admittedly worried about this whole “20 Years and 20 Questions” deal for AI’s best kicks, but the colorways I’ve seen so far have me convinced that Reebok Classics might be able to pull this off. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
Todd: (WAIT) I’ve never owned a pair of Questions. Not sure I ever will, but this is executed really well. Great color blocking and use of textiles.
Renz: (BUY) The colorway is too nice. I’m biased towards the design as well. A definite cop for die-hard fans of the silhouette.
News Juan: (BUY) I’ve never owned a pair of Reebok Questions, but something about this pair is luring me in. I love the colors and materials Reebok used on this pair. This is definitely a pair I’d consider buying. Great way to start of the 20th anniversary of the Reebok Question.
Andres: (PASS) This is a decent colorway of the Reebok Question but I much prefer the OG white and red colorway that released today. The Winter look is a good change of pace for this basketball shoe though.
adidas Crazylight Boost 2.5 All-Star James Harden PE
EIC Juan: (BUY) Well, adidas managed to make the craziest All-Star game shoe so that’s got to count for something. I like the implementation of XENO on basketball kicks like the D Rose 6 and J Wall 2 and this is another winner for me because its reflective patterns closely resemble the XENO ZX Flux.
Todd: (PASS) This shoe is just too much of a stretch using Xeno elements and the toe elicits memories of the first two T-Mac shoes. I can’t get behind it.
Renz: (PASS) I’ve never really liked this model. The execution is just a little messy in my view.
News Juan: (WAIT) One of the coolest looking releases of All-Star Weekend. The Xeno hits on the upper give the shoe a nice pop and the fact that is has Boost technology on it makes it even better. Not sure if it will sell out, but I’m okay with waiting a bit in hopes of picking them up in the long run for a cheaper price.
Andres: (WAIT) Since everyone will be going after the Jordan Brand releases this weekend it’s very likely that the Crazylight Boost 2.5 will be slept on. This shoe would be cop-worthy if you can get it for below retail down the line.
Nike Kobe 11 All-Star
EIC Juan: (GOT ‘EM) It’s Mamba’s game shoe in maybe the last culturally significant game he’ll play before his finale. For historic purposes, they were a must for me.
Todd: (PASS) The midsole turned me off from the first glimpse. Plus, I just don’t like the silhouette of the 11.
Renz: (PASS) I do admire the silhouette, but not particularly in this colorway. It’s not that bad overall, maybe if there was a little less of the green glow accents.
News Juan: (PASS) I’m still waiting for a Nike Kobe 11 colorway that will blow me away. Unfortunately, this is still not the one. It’s solid, but not for me.
Andres: (WAIT) Being that this is Kobe’s final All Star sneaker ever that reason alone makes many people want to buy a pair. I would consider it too but not for the $220 retail price. I wonder how much these will be discounted in a few weeks?
Best Sneaker Nobody Is Talking About This Weekend?
EIC Juan: Li-Ning Way of Wade 4 All-Star
With only a hundred pairs out there, D-Wade’s All-Star kicks were destined to fly under the radar. Which is a shame because I’ve always wanted a pair of kicks that totally reminds me of the Silver Surfer. I’ll probably never see them in person but they should be fun to watch on Wade’s feet during the game.
Todd: My guess is that we’re not talking about the best shoe yet because we haven’t seen it. With Kobe’s last go round coming on Sunday, I’d look for some tributes to him similar to the Jordan tributes in 2003.
Renz: Feature x Asics Gel Lyte 5 Prickly Pear
It doesn’t correlate with the theme, but this collaboration is pretty sweet. I do like the silhouette a lot as well, so I guess I’m just biased. Nonetheless, a nice variation of the model this year so far.
News Juan: Air Jordan 1 Low OG Chicago
The Jordan 1 Low gets a bad rap to begin with, so it’s no surprise that no one is really talking about this release. In my opinion, the Chicago color scheme is so iconic that it even makes the Air Jordan 1 Low look better than usual. I hope these sit like the past Air Jordan 1 Low releases so it can give me a chance to pick them up for under $100. Even if they don’t go under $100, I still think I’m tempted enough to cop a pair. That’s how dope I think the shoe looks in a Chicago color scheme.
Andres: I would have to say the Air Jordan 1 Low OG Chicago. I know lots of people bash the Air Jordan 1 Low, but no one can deny that this colorway is super clean. I may attempt to pick up a pair in the future when they fall below retail.
