We have seen the stories and read the news about the social and economic woes created by a lack of Adequate Retirement income. Be it a single elderly woman in rural Ontario or a city-dwelling senior couple, the outcome is usually the same: a life of declining living standards sliding towards poverty.
Not having enough income in retirement means difficult choices for many older citizens, such as putting nutritious food on the table or paying the hydro bill. It means trips to the food bank, social isolation and a host of other miseries seniors should not be subjected to in this day and age.
Poverty levels among seniors are rising in Canada. A report from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) details the impact inadequate retirement income has on living standards among seniors in British Columbia, a trend seen across the country.
