Welcome back to the Master Oh blog. The theory that Music positively benefits mental health shouldn’t come as a surprise. On today’s blog we look at exactly how music benefits mental health and processes involved.
Research has shown that listening to music triggers the brain to release the neurotransmitter dopamine. Valorie Salimpoor, a neuroscientist at McGill University, conducted a study which involved injecting eight people with a substance that binds to dopamine receptors. After they listened to their favorite music a PET scan showed that large amounts of dopamine were released, which biologically caused the participants to feel emotions like happiness, excitement, and joy.
Listening to music could counteract the effects of chronic stress by decreasing the stress hormone cortisol. One study tested this theory by investigating the effects of active and passive participation in musical activity. The findings revealed that if people actively participated in playing percussion instruments and singing, their immune systems was boosted. Even passive participation was shown to be beneficial.
Insomnia is a growing problem in the Western world and clearly goes hand-in-hand with other conditions like stress, anxiety and depression. A study conducted on students showed that those who listened to relaxing classical music for 45 minutes before going to bed slept significantly better than those who didn’t.
To expand on the above point, the same research also found that symptoms of depression decreased significantly in those who listened to classical music before bedtime, but not in the other groups. Another study conducted by Hans Joachim Trappe, Professor of Medicine in the Department of Cardiology and Angiology at the University of Bochum, also demonstrated that music was beneficial to patients with depressive symptoms.
Marcelo Bigliassi of Brunel University London, found that runners who listened to fast or slow motivational music completed the first 800 meters of their run faster than runners who listened to calm music or ran without music.
