One Book at a Time

While I can read more than one book at once, I don’t like to.

It bothers me to read more than one Book at a time. While I’m capable of doing it, I think reading more than one book at once actually takes away from my comprehension of the stories.

I like to give a book everything while I’m reading it because I want to absorb it fully and make sure I’m invested. I don’t feel like I can do that if I’m trying to spread my attention over multiple books at once, and I’m pretty sure that’s true for everyone, whether they will admit it or not.

Sometimes I think I’m failing as a book blogger if I’m not reading 5 books at once. It seems like every book blogger I follow reads upwards of 20 books each month and has a “currently reading” list that is pages long. But books are like everything else we decide to devote our time to, you can spread yourself too thin. A book is like a friend. If you throw a party for all of your closest friends, it will be almost impossible for you to have meaningful interactions with all of them at the same time. If you want to maintain a friendship, it takes one-on-one interaction. Parties are fun, but most of us can’t maintain a “party every night” lifestyle for an extended period of time.

The same theory works with books. There are certain times when I need to read more than one at a time. Maybe I have a deadline, or I have to read a book because I’m teaching it to my students. There are always exceptions to a rule. However, I am always going to strive for completely finishing one book before starting another.

Exception

The only exception I have to the “I don’t like to read multiple books at a time” rule is audiobooks. I like to listen to audiobooks and podcasts when I run, so I sometimes will have one of those going while I’m reading a physical or Kindle copy of another book. My most recent example of this is I listened to the book Educated while I was reading The Masterpiece. I was enthralled by Educated, so I don’t think it was a detriment. BUT usually I don’t absorb as much when I listed to an audiobook as I do when I read it.

How about you? Do you have any tips for reading more than one book at a time? Do you think the Bookstagram and Book Blogging communities pressure us book lovers to always be reading multiple books?
