Not even the fabulous Ivanka Trump could sell the notions of pay equity for women and affordable childcare to the rabidly right-wing crowd that supports Donald Trump. And she’s a pretty slick saleswoman.
While reasonable Americans were scratching their heads at the kinder, gentler Donald Trump his polished daughter tried to present on the last day of the GOP convention, conservatives were starting to froth at the mouth. In addition to painting sweet pictures of her childhood Lego exploits, Ivanka portrayed her father as a fighter for women and the downtrodden who is “colorblind and gender-neutral.” After pointing out that of all groups of women, mothers lag the furthest behind when it comes to pay equity, she vowed to fight alongside him for child care that is, “affordable and accessible for all,” and for women’s rights, equal pay and maternity leave.
Small note: Her father's campaign is reportedly paying women staffers 35 percent less than the men. Not to mention the fact that the notion of equal pay for women and affordable childcare is completely AWOL from the Republican platform. Details details.
Truth or falsity aside, Ivanka was playing far outside the conservative playbook, and that just won’t fly. As Amanda Carpenter wrote for the Conservative Review, “Standing before millions of viewers on the final night of the convention to introduce Donald Trump in his momentous acceptance speech, Ivanka declared she is not a Republican and then proposed several liberal policy proposals targeted toward women on behalf of her father.”
The horror.
