I see in the papers today that Newcastle United are said to be readying a £15-million bid for Saido Berahino, funny that, it's just the figure I said during the summer he would be worth this window. I had seen nothing to change that view and even wrote that he may well not perform for them until the next window. It all seemed pretty obvious to me, you only had to read the situation rather than react to it. I'm sure there are plenty of you out there who came to the same conclusions.

The talk of £20-million or £23-million or indeed the £20-million plus Andros Townsend (£34-million) was and is nonsense. Football is a business, it has been since at least the 70's, the game is the product. Clubs are businesses and the business has to be successful for the Club to be successful, just ask Bolton Wanderers, Wigan, Blackpool or Portsmouth. All are recent Premier League teams and Bolton will be joining the others who have sunk to League One or League Two.

It is the job of the selling club to get as much as they can for an asset and the job of the buying clubs to pay as little as they can. It is standard practice to buy assets with installment payments and add-ons based on performance. All that happened during the summer is that WBA couldn't agree a payment structure for Charlie Austin, QPR wanted Money up front so WBA demanded it of us, no dice.

All the bluster and hot air from their chairman served no purpose, his statements designed to deflect blame onto ourselves. Pulis wanted Berahino sold so he could use the money to rebuild, now he has a depreciating asset that sets back the club possibly years. It is a lesson to all clubs, including ourselves.

We have had players we have asked too much for and been unable to move. We spent the Bale money, or more accurately wasted it, and have had to rebuild again. We have had seasons where we needed a striker but couldn't sell players to pay for one. Sometimes you have to accept shooting yourself in the foot by demanding too high a fee is not the best move.

I would suggest it makes no difference to us whether we sell Fazio this window or the next, the same probably with Townsend. Neither are going to play, neither are playing and we don't miss them. Wimmer is the back-up centre-back and if there are two injuries Dier can be moved back there with Bentaleb coming into midfield perhaps or Dembele taking over the role. The versatility in the squad allows us to work with a smaller squad and potentially keep them involved more.

Transfer values are a fine line, great if a stance works, if not it can be detrimental to yourself.
