To say this was one of the best evenings I’ve had in a long time would be an understatement! When an invite to The Royal Horseguards Hotel (a 5* one may I add) to take part in a wine tasting was sent to my inbox, I accepted quicker than you could imagine. I’m a big wine lover as you may already know and am always up for trying new ones and learning more about them – although it’s not always easy to remember what you’ve learnt after a few glasses! Here’s what we got up to at the RHG Wine Tasting.
This was the first outing with my new Olympus Pen e-PL7 so do excuse any less-than-perfect photos!
We started off the evening with a glass of Prosecco and some nuts to nibble (shush) before heading off for a tour of the hotel…
We got a little look at the terrace area outside and it’s bloody gorgeous! I really want to go back during the summer and spend an evening drinking wine with a stunning view of the Thames!

After a little tour we headed down to The Cellar (which yes, is actually a cellar) for our wine tasting. We were led by sommelier Kelly from Tastour and she was highly entertaining and knowledgeable. Seriously, she knew her shit and made it really fun at the same time.
Wines 1 & 2
Taittinger Brut Réserve Champagne (left) – a fancy £85 bottle.
Chapel Down Brut Blanc de Blancs, England (right) – £60 bottle.
I preferred the latter of the two – at least I’m a cheap date, oui?
Wines 3 & 4 – white
Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough – £72 bottle.
Saint Veran Chardonnay – £42 bottle. Aka, the perfect winter white.
Wines 5 & 6 – red
Gamay-Pinot Noir Coteaux Bourguignons Rouge – £38 bottle.
Veramonte Cabernet Sauvignon – £33 bottle.
My favourite of the night, Gamay-Pinot Noir Coteaux Bourguignons Rouge – the 2nd least expensive of the bunch! LOL.
For the rest of the night I drank more of said wine, nibbled on canapes and chatted. I wanted to ask the sommelier her opinion on Barefoot wine (Zinfandel FTW!) but instead, in my slightly intoxicated state, got confused asked her about Blossom Hill making me look like the biggest wine cheapskate known to man.
Not gunna lie, I did get
a little drunk and when I got home I devoured a pizza (gluten free of course) with lots of chicken and peppers. Yum. Crazy thing was, the next day I had no trace of a hangover! It’s amazing how good wine doesn’t make you regret everything the next day!
Oh, and I won a bottle of Taittinger which was awesome and highly unexpected! I’m saving it for New Year to welcome 2016 in style!
Thanks so much to Joe Blogs Network, Tastour and The Royal Horseguards Hotel for having me – it was an incredible evening!
