Coffee isn’t just a tool used for fueling our days and ideas though – drinking it can be a deeply personal ritual that helps us unwind from daily stress, or a positive bonding experience when we share some with our friends and family. There are certainly adventures for your taste buds to be had when exploring refined and exotic bean varieties from across the globe, and there’s nothing like the smell of a familiar blend to awaken memories of home and comfort.

We’ve turned coffee into a social catalyst, a fashion statement and even an art form. It also has other tangible health benefits, like reducing the risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease or helping to combat depression. That’s why we owe it to ourselves and those we love to make the experience of drinking it the best it can be.

Picking out the right type of coffee machine is a challenge, and deciding on a model after that even more so. Bulky or small, single serve or enough to keep your whole family going, it’s easy to lose track with so many options out there. I’ve had to go through the process of picking and choosing different coffee makers a number of times now and decided to finally put my hands-on experience to use in offering a comprehensive guide to some of the best options currently available.

Each model has been tested for a number of different factors such as preparation time, capacity, taste, and ease of use. I’ve also included some general tips on picking out a good coffee maker at the end of the guide, and reading them will round out your knowledge, so be sure to check out our Coffee Maker Buying Guide even if you’ve found a favorite in the review section.

All this talk of coffee is making me crave some, so let’s get right to it!

1. BUNN NHS Velocity Brew 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer – The Best Bunn Coffee Maker

BUNN NHS Velocity Brew 10-Cup Home Coffee Brewer Review

I love products that let you simply set everything up, press a few buttons and get what you wanted from them in mere minutes. When it is time to apply that philosophy to coffee making, it’s great that there’s a reliable machine out there from a trusted brand such as Bunn to deliver every time.

The NHS Velocity won’t be winning any beauty contests anytime soon, but since its main function is to make an outstanding brew and not dazzle with its looks, I’ll let that slide and you should too! Simplicity, effectiveness and great results are this machine’s strong suits, and I’m glad that this is something Bunn didn’t compromise on.

Everything about this coffee maker has been engineered to get the most out of the grounds you put in. On one hand, there’s the spray head that covers the ground coffee with hot water as evenly as possible. On the other, its uniquely designed filter has a flat bottom, allowing the water and grounds to take up a much larger space and interact more freely, producing a richer, fuller flavor.

Apart from the great taste, this Bunn coffee maker excels at convenience. Its large internal tank is made from stainless steel and can hold up to 10 cups worth of water. What’s more, it has a great feature that keeps the water at a constant brewing temperature without any input required on your end – just fill it up through the convenient lid, leave it plugged in and get ready to feel the flavor of freshly-brewed coffee in mere minutes, whenever you’d like. There’s even a “vacation mode” which shuts the tank’s heating element off without the need to pull the plug on the whole machine.

The NHS Velocity does an excellent job at providing good coffee in the three to four minutes it takes to make some. The one thing that disappointed me about this model was the lack of any sort of timer.

If you just want a respectable amount of coffee to come out perfect every time without having to tinker much with your machine, then the NHS Velocity is the best coffee maker for you. What’s even better is that Bunn offers a limited 3-year warranty on it!

  • Internal tank
  • Fast brew time
  • Great-tasting results
  • Lacks a timer

2. Cuisinart DCC-3200 14-Cup Glass Carafe with Stainless Steel Handle Programmable Coffeemaker – The Best Coffee Maker for Everyday Use

Cuisinart DCC-3200 14-Cup Glass Carafe with Stainless Steel Handle Programmable Coffeemaker Review

Bunn’s model is great if you don’t want any fuss over your morning cup, but what about those of you that love to fiddle with a lot of settings and experiment with different outcomes? Never fear, because of the good folks at Cuisinart, renowned for producing some of the best coffee makers in general.

The modern stainless steel of the DCC-3200’s body contrasts very well with the black heater and carafe housing. A minimalistic LCD display with buttons makes everything complete, giving it a cool look that will be appreciated in any kitchen setting.

This model’s strongest feature is its programmability – almost anything you could possibly dream of adjusting on a coffee maker has been enabled! Can’t wait for the whole batch to finish and want to grab a cup as soon as possible? The pause feature has got you covered. Like your Coffee a bit stronger that most? The appropriate setting will take care of that. My most favorite features though are the timer and the “keep warm” setting. I don’t know how many times I’ve set the timer to have a fresh batch ready by the time I get home from work, and even if I’m running late or have extra work to do I can count on the DCC-3200 to keep everything warm for me.

In the case of this model, a lot of settings don’t mean that it is hard to use – all of the buttons and functions are explained clearly, and you can be sure that the coffee will come out tasting perfect whichever setting you use.

At 14 cups, this Cuisinart model will take care of multiple people’s needs throughout the day, but this also means that its size is a bit bigger than that of your garden variety machine. Make sure that you have enough room on your kitchen counter and that your cupboards are high enough for it to fit under them before committing to buy one.

The DCC-3200 managed to thoroughly impress me. It makes great-tasting coffee quickly, allows for a number of different and useful options, and will even make your kitchen more attractive. Really, what’s not to love? Which is why this is TRVNK’s choice for the best coffee maker for home!

  • Cool design
  • Large capacity
  • Many programmable options
  • Might not fit onto smaller workspaces

3. Hamilton Beach 49980A Single Serve Coffee Brewer and Full Pot Coffee Maker – The Best Single Cup Coffee Maker and Drip Coffee Maker

Hamilton Beach 49980A Single Serve Coffee Brewer and Full Pot Coffee Maker Review

Some people like to use their coffee making machine exclusively for that one beverage, while others like the versatility of being able to make a wider variety of drinks, saving money and space in the process. Hamilton Beach offers this interesting combination in the form of the 49980A coffee maker.

Considering that they had to divide the model into two parts, its design turned out quite nicely. It has a similar vibe to the model from Cuisinart I discussed above, but with its own distinct flavor. I like the clearly defined buttons and switches, and the display is nothing to scoff at either.

Even though I’d be hesitant to say that it’s the best single serve coffee maker or drip coffee maker, it performs both jobs surprisingly well! On one hand, you’ve got your standard 12-cup machine that can produce steaming hot coffee for the whole family in a very short time. On the other, the single serve option enables you to fill up a thermos or travel cup and be on your way. The coolest thing about this coffee maker is that you can easily make other hot beverages too like hot chocolate or tea.

The coffee maker comes with a hot plate that keeps the coffee hot. If you’re the kind of person who likes to make a full carafe of coffee and expect to be able to drink it hot, the hot plate keeps your coffee hot for at least 2 hours before shutting off. This is plenty of time for you to enjoy your coffee in the morning, especially for those lazy mornings!

People who aren’t hung up on this one thing and who enjoy having the versatility this coffee maker brings with it will find the tradeoff more than acceptable. The beverages it produces are delicious and hot; the number of programmable options is decent, and thanks to Hamilton Beach’s innovative design approach, you won’t spill a drop from the carafe, which would have almost been worth it on its own if you ask me.

  • Makes good coffee on both sides
  • Carafe prevents spilling
  • Allows for preparation of other beverages
  • Hotplate isn’t up to snuff
  • A travel cup is not included

4. Mr. Coffee ECMP1000 Café Barista Premium Espresso/Cappuccino System – An Excellent Cappuccino Maker that Won’t Break Your Bank

Mr. Coffee ECMP1000 Café Barista Premium Espresso and Cappuccino System Review

The next machine on our list can also do two things quite well! I’ve decided to set my sights on the ECMP1000 from Mr. Coffee, a machine that can make piping hot espressos or cloud-like cappuccinos with ease!

So far I’ve been discussing coffee makers that are more or less only suitable for large quantities of great tasting but plain black coffee. Although that’s my go-to drink in the morning, sometimes I like to stir things up a bit with a delicious latte or cappuccino. That doesn’t mean I always want to go to the café to enjoy a cup, especially if I have something like the ECMP1000 to make it myself at the comfort of my own home.

I like the hands-on approach of the ECMP1000 when it comes to pouring the espresso – it makes me feel like I’m my own barista. On the other hand, I don’t have the skills of one, which is why I also thoroughly appreciate that the milk frothing feature is fully automated. Both the milk and the water used to make the coffee are blasted out of the same high-pressure boiler. This means that you’ll need to make an espresso first and then add the milk/froth, but since overall the process is quick and easy it doesn’t amount to much of a hassle.

Both the milk reservoir and water tank can be removed so you can top up either one easily, or use the remaining milk for something else after your drink is complete. Other cool features include an adjustable espresso strength setting and a froth density dial which will allow you to customize the resulting drink to your own taste nicely.

Be sure to properly maintain and take care of the machine after each time you use it. If not taken care of regularly, the pressure where it pumps out coffee and milk can decrease.

At its price point, this cappuccino maker is practically a steal. The only compromise I was able to discover was that it won’t be able to cover a really high demand, but that’s not really what it was designed for anyway. If you want to enjoy a cup or two of excellent, home-made espresso or cappuccino, then it will do a fine job of it.

  • Automated milk frother
  • Lots of adjustable settings
  • Outstanding price value
  • Requires constant maintenance

5. Cuisinart DGB-550BK 12 Cup Automatic Coffeemaker Grind – The Best Coffee Maker with Grinder

Cuisinart DGB-550BK 12 Cup Automatic Coffeemaker Grind Review

There’s definitely something to be said about the irresistible smell of freshly-ground coffee in the morning. Whether you stick to one particular sort or like to experiment with different varieties of coffee beans from around the world, having a grinder is essential to unlocking their flavor to the fullest. But why should you have to pay for one separately when Cuisinart offers an all-in-one grinding and brewing experience with another outstanding model, the DGB-550BK?

I was surprised at how little space this coffee maker takes up, relative to its volume and features of course. This should allow it to get a permanent home in almost any kitchen, while its sleek design and respectable build quality will make sure it stays in there for a long while.

The feature that stands out the most is obviously its built-in grinder, which does a fantastic job of producing flavorful coffee full of aroma. It can also easily be switched off when you want to use coffee that has already been ground up. Best of all, the grinder can be set to a timer too! You can program the machine before going to bed and get woken up by the whirring of its blades.

Once ground up- the coffee is filtered in two ways. First, the built-in charcoal filter takes care of any odors or impurities in the water. Then the brew is given the royal treatment as it passes through its gold-toned filtration system that preserves its flavor.

Since it’s made by Cuisinart, other useful features I’ve already talked about when reviewing the DCC-3200, like the brew pause option and strength settings, are present in this model too, adding to its appeal even more.

Since the coffee grinder can’t be removed it makes cleaning the coffee machine’s interior more challenging and inconvenient.

A coffee maker with grinder sounds like a great idea on paper, and Cuisinart has proven that it can work great in practice too. Capable of grinding the coffee, preserving all of its qualities and delivering a mighty fine cup quickly and on demand, this might very well be the best tasting coffee maker when it comes to making as fresh and as great-tasting coffee as possible. This is definitely one of the best coffee makers with grinders on the market!

  • Powerful grinder
  • Excellent filtration system
  • Programmability
  • Can be a challenge to clean properly

6. Braun KF7150BK Brew Sense Drip Coffee Maker – The Best Drip Coffee Maker

Braun KF7150BK Brew Sense Drip Coffee Maker Review

As with most products, the world of coffee makers is one of competition. Long established brands and newcomers alike try to draw in coffee lovers with a slew of different features and solutions. Innovation plays a key part and keeps everyone on their toes. Braun is proven masters of this art, and demonstrate their capabilities once again with the KF7150BK.

First of all, I must confess that I LOVE this coffee maker’s design. It’s not pretentious or bulky – it just works! The clean and rounded look goes hand in hand with its two-toned contrast and is sure to attract attention when friends come over. In the looks department, this is hands down one of the best drip coffee makers in my book.

That’s just a small part of what the KF7150BK can offer though. Out of the box, it is very simple to set up and use. The huge LED display features a timer and clock, while the buttons underneath it are easy to understand and use. A whole host of programmable features includes things seen before like a strength selector and auto-shutoff, but also some nice additions like the ability to brew one to four cups of coffee, select the water temperature and clean the machine.

I’ve mentioned innovation, and this is where this coffee maker excels at. It takes advantage of what Brown call the Pure Flavor Brewing System, a proprietary technology that helps keep the coffee’s flavor fresh and consistent from start to finish. You won’t have to deal with a weak first cup and much too strong last one ever again thanks to this.

On top of making consistent coffee, this model does its best to keep it that way too thanks to another Braun innovation, the FlavorCarafe. Able to serve up to 12 cups without spillage, its unique construction keeps the temperature constant while preserving the aroma and flavor even after some time has passed.

The weird thing about this Braun coffee maker is the clock. It has to be set before you can start using it properly. It’s not a big deal but if the clock stops working any programming on the coffee machine doesn’t work. So it basically means that you’ll have to get it repaired or replaced if this malfunction even though the coffee maker itself still works perfectly fine.

Hard as I tried, I couldn’t find any big issues with the Braun coffee maker. It produces a fine brew you know will taste evenly, it has a solid selection of features and looks great to boot. Since it’s not even that expensive, there’s little that would stop you from pulling the trigger on one.

  • Superb design
  • Produces flavorful coffee
  • Big LED display / clock
  • No pause option

7. KRUPS EC3140 Savoy Programmable Digital Coffee Maker Machine – The Best KRUPS Coffee Maker to Keep Your Brew Warm

KRUPS EC3140 Savoy Programmable Digital Coffee Maker Machine Review

Some people like to drink their coffee as soon as it leaves the machine, scalding hot temperatures notwithstanding. Any coffee maker worth its salt will allow you to experience this, but some of them fall short when it comes to maintaining the brew at an acceptable temperature throughout the day. Not so with the EC3140 Savoy from Krups!

Its design is compact, uniformed, and pleasing to the eye. As is the trend with almost all the coffee makers that we have reviewed, there’s the stainless steel and black color combo that won’t be out of place in any modern kitchen. The major difference here is a knob used to adjust the brew strength. It kinda makes the EC3140 look like a stereo system, which makes it look pretty cool.

The main focus of this Krups coffee maker is to offer a number of customization options when making the coffee and then keeping it warm for you for as long as it takes. Its programmability is excellent – you can set the strength to normal or bold, brew one to four cups instead of the maximum 12, and set the timer to your liking. There’s even a setting that takes what day of the week it is into consideration, so if you want to sleep in on the weekends but still be welcomed by freshly-made coffee, the EC3140 Savoy will not disappoint.

Once brewed, the coffee can be kept warm during the day. There are three different temperature presets for the hot plate, ranging from comfortably warm to hot. Its carafe can hold up to 12 cups’ worth of coffee and is also safe to clean in the dishwasher. Cleanup, in general, is easy with this model, requiring minimal effort on your part.

I found that getting to the water tank could be a bit hard at times. It is placed inconveniently towards the back and bottom of the machine and you’ll need to use a bit of strength to get it out.

All in all, the EC3140 Savoy performs with excellence when it comes to fueling coffee drinkers’ energy needs throughout the day. Given that it is very reasonably priced too, I can’t help but recommend it since the value for the money is so good.

  • Three hot plate settings
  • Fast brew time
  • Hard to reach water tank

8. Toddy T2N Cold Brew System – The Best Cold Brew Coffee Maker

Toddy T2N Cold Brew System Review

The next coffee maker on our list is the Toddy T2N Cold Brew System. It’s different from all the other ones we’ve already reviewed because this one focuses on cold brewing coffee!

The idea behind cold brewing is simple – rather than going the standard way of adding finely ground coffee to very hot water, a coarser grind and cold water are used. This mixture is then left for 12 to 24 hours so that the water can extract all of the flavor and aromas from the grounds, but with much less acid and oils, resulting in a more healthy and better-tasting drink.

The T2N basically streamlines this process and makes it super easy for you – adding the grounds and some water is all it takes for it to make its magic. Well, the fantastic filter has something to do with it too – Toddy offers a reusable filter of the highest quality which will produce the same signature taste ten times or more.

Since the coffee you end up with is concentrated, some more water should be added to it to make it taste just right. This also makes the T2N pretty economical since up to 32 cups can be made with a single carafe’s worth of coffee. I kept the brew in my fridge and made cups as needed, and the carafe ended up lasting me more than a week, while the coffee tasted as good on the last day as it did on the first.

For a product that takes so long to do what it’s supposed to, I was surprised that the T2N didn’t come with a lid. A quick solution for this is to use a sheet of paper towel to cover the top so it breathes better.

Producing coffee in this way was a novel experience for me, but definitely a pleasant one, thanks in no small part to the T2N’s excellent design and ease of use. If you’re feeling adventurous and would like to give this method a shot yourself, this is the best cold brew coffee maker to do it with.

  • Less acidic coffee with excellent taste
  • Reusable filters
  • Large volume
  • Has no lid

9. Keurig K55 Single Serve Programmable K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker – The Best Keurig Coffee Maker

Keurig K55 Single Serve Programmable K-Cup Pod Coffee Maker Review

No guide on fine coffee makers would be complete without mentioning a model from renowned manufacturer Keurig. They’re the household name when it comes to providing that single cup of your favorite drink, and the K55 is one of their best machines.

The K55 brewing experience is very user-friendly. Unlike other models I’ve discussed before, this one doesn’t have a fancy display, but it doesn’t really need one since Keurig have done a wonderful job of making its combination of lights and buttons easy to understand and make use of.

Its other major advantage is speed – Keurig boasts that this model can deliver an 8-ounce cup of your favorite K-Cup beverage or standard coffee in a minute flat. As soon as it is turned on, a pre-heating action brings the water’s temperature up, making it ready for the brewing process. All that’s left is for the coffee maker to go through the single serving capsule and we’re good to go!

Keurig has also minimized the hassle of having to refill the water tank. One tank can hold enough water to make up to six standard-sized cups, or eight small ones. It can dispense 6-10 ounces of water per serving, which is a convenient way to manually set the desired strength of the brew too.

As with all single serve coffee makers, the K55 should be descaled regularly, ideally every three months, in order to keep it in peak working condition. Day-to-day maintenance is much more straightforward and easier to do since the water tank is easily removable and a drip tray takes care of any unwanted accidents.

There are more expensive models out there, but this model occupies the sweet spot between price, a number of features, brew quality and the fact that it supports so many different flavors, making the K55 the best Keurig coffee maker in my book.

  • Fast brew time
  • Wide selection of K-Cup products
  • Easy to use
  • Requires regular descaling
  • The K-Cups themselves are a bit pricey

10. Breville BDC650BSS Grind Control – The Best Breville Coffee Maker

Breville BDC650BSS Grind Control Review

I’ve decided to end the review segment of the guide with a highlight, and Breville’s BDC650BSS looks like a perfect fit for the job. Why? Because it boasts some of the best features I’ve talked about when reviewing other models and turns it up a notch when it comes to most of them.

Design-wise it looks massive, and I mean that in a good way. It gives off a professional vibe which adds an air of sophistication and performance. That’s great on its own, but what’s even better is how the whole build of the BDC650BSS serves to bring out the best of its capabilities. It’s highly functional LCD display steals the show, providing you with info on a number of different parameters like water levels, the time it takes to grind the coffee, grinder settings, and various other programming options.

The built-in grinder can be set to eight different settings, so depending on the beans you’ll be grinding and the coarseness of the grounds that you like the most, there are plenty of customization options for even the pickiest enthusiast.

Usable as both a single serve and a drip coffee maker, the BDC650BSS is one of the most versatile models I’ve reviewed. Even if you need to make just half a carafe for a family breakfast, the taste of the coffee will not be compromised. This is thanks to the special way the grounds are treated. After the grinder does its share of the work, the resulting grounds are soaked in water for a time first rather than being brewed straight away. This does make the whole brewing process last longer than with other models, but it ensures that three cups worth of coffee taste as delicious as the whole twelve.

Speaking of the carafe, it is made from stainless steel as opposed to glass, acting as a thermos and keeping the brew warm almost as long as a hot plate without the energy cost. Although the carafe’s overall design is fantastic, the way in which its lid is constructed makes getting the last drops of coffee out of it a little tricky. You’re basically going to have to turn it on its head to empty it completely, so be aware of the spillage potential that goes along with this.

I was positively surprised with this Breville coffee maker and its capabilities. It is the most expensive product on the list, but all of its extra features and superb results make investing in one absolutely justified.

  • Wide range of features
  • Thorough and informative display
  • Stainless steel carafe
  • Issues with the carafe’s construction

Coffee Maker Buyer’s Guide

Having covered multiple types of coffee makers means I can’t get into the specifics of each one, but there are still a number of tips you should go over that apply to any and all models. Keeping these things in mind will aid you in making a smarter purchase.

The most important thing to take into account when shopping around for a coffee maker is finding something according to what you need. Your lifestyle and those of your family will have the greatest impact on this decision. Luckily, there are different models for different tasks, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Weigh these carefully and decide based on them:

  • Drip coffee machines make the biggest amount of coffee and keep it hot all day long. They require regular maintenance and even when that is done the coffee can sometimes taste off, mostly with lower quality models
  • Single serve models are great for when you need one cup, fast. There are many varieties of beverages that can be prepared in them, but the packages they come in aren’t environmentally friendly and there are people who generally don’t like the taste.
  • Hybrid models offer a mix of both options, but generally don’t excel at either, especially since proprietary single-serve packets can’t be used with most
  • Espresso machines offer what many would consider a better tasting alternative to single-serve models, but their price and hands-on approach can turn some people away
  • Maintenance – Depending on how much time and effort you’re willing to invest in your brew, the options are a bit clearer. Single serve coffee makers are the easiest and cleanest to operate, although when cleaning time does come around it can be a chore. Drip models are a bit messier but can be almost as easy to use. Espresso machines can be fully automated, but some are completely manual and actually, have a steep learning curve, so if you like the challenge and rewards of making coffee just the way you like it, they’re the top dog.
  • Extra Features – Most of the time a standard coffee making machine will get the job done well enough, but generally speaking the best coffee maker in any of the mentioned categories has a number of additional features that set it apart. The most important ones have to do with the quality of the end result, so built-in grinders, water filters, dosage adjustment and brew infusion are the first things to look for. Other options that are also nice to have include cup warmers, removable tanks, stainless steel carafes and milk frothers. Choose which of these you absolutely need and which you can do without to make a balanced decision between price and number of features.
  • Size – A bane of people with small kitchens everywhere, the wrong dimensions can prevent you from buying an otherwise perfect coffee maker. This hits closest to home for drip models and espresso machines since bigger models can take up a lot of space both horizontally and vertically. So make sure the coffee maker is the right size so you have enough space for it.
