Did you know Water is an essential nutrient?
It might sound too obvious, but honestly, how many of us have given it a thought? It does make sense when some caring masterminds are earning ton load of money by just launching an app to remind us to Drink Water! So why don’t we do the favor to ourselves? If you are not convinced now, continue reading!
50-80% of our Body mass contains water. You get around 20 % of it from solid foods you eat. I would like to call H2O as the hero of the nutrient play.
To list some other fun facts about H2O:
- Maintain the cell volume, fill the gaps between the cells
- As a carrier of nutrients and oxygen
- As a shock absorber in eye socket, spinal cord, to protect fetus
- Hot water stimulates immune system
- 22% of the bone mass and 75% of muscle is made up of water
And the list is exhaustive!
The balance of water Intake and loss is an important factor for our livelihood. When the loss is higher than intake, the scenario can result in dehydration and serious issues such as resulting in kidney stones, urinary tract infection and some life-threatening scenario.
Did you know most of us mistake being thirsty with hunger? Next time when you are hungry, try having 2 cups of water, you will know if you were really hungry! It is also a well-known fact that increased liquid intake aids in weight loss.
On an average, an adult loses up to 2.5-3 liters of water due to sweating, urination, and perspiration. Higher metabolic activity, temperature fluctuations, some food habits (high protein diet, excess fat) can increase the daily intake requirement. Also, higher altitudes (mostly while flying) you dehydrate more. Dehydration in some cases also causes headaches (makes sense why most of us have headaches in summer?)
So, you have read this long, let me ask you a question.
WHO has said that H2O will also potentially give us some minerals needed for our body (such as iron, chloride, zinc, copper)? Answer: WHO- World Health Organisation! (Please tell me you got it :P)
But we should also keep in mind that even though there is no upper limit on keeping yourself hydrated, there is a condition called hyponatremia which is caused by excess of drinking water in a short period of time. In this condition, our body struggles to maintain the water balance and the sodium levels drop to dangerously lower levels. Worry not! This seldom happens. So, let us get back to focusing on Having more of H2O and keeping ourselves hydrated.
There are hundreds of website that gives you tips on drinking more of it (self, womenshealthmag, etc). So, let me not bore you on that. An adult would need about 2.5-3.5 liters of it every day to have a balanced water level and remove toxins from our body. To give a perspective, water is probably the most inexpensive nutrient that you can get! So why not just start your healthy quest by drinking more water?
