Arsenal must break their Wage Structure to keep Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil if they are serious about winning Premier League titles, according to Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler.
Both players have just 18 months remaining on their contracts at the Emirates, with Sanchez understood to be on £130,000 a week and Ozil the top earner on £140,000, but the club will need to smash their current Wage structure in order to stop the pair from leaving on a free in the summer of 2018.
Arsenal lead the Premier League following their 3-1 victory over Stoke but, if they want to stay there this season and win titles in the future, Fowler believes the club must change their approach and loosen the purse strings when it comes to their pay structure.
Writing in his column for the Mirror, Fowler insisted he admires Wenger's ability to develop players and regenerate his squad following the departures of key men but, using Jurgen Klopp's Borussia Dortmund side as an example, insisted it is not possible to sustain trophy-winning seasons while allowing leading players to leave.
"Their two biggest stars have less than 18 months left on their deals and both will want to smash the wage structure at the Emirates,' Fowler wrote."With Arsenal's current policies, both players will be leaving by the summer.
"Inevitably, over the past decade, that has meant stars will leave - and it has also created situations that have prevented Wenger's teams from challenging for the title."If contract negotiations drag out with them, they will not win the title again this season either."So, the board must decide what they want to be - a team which wins honors, or one which has an admirable, but, ultimately, limiting wages policy.'
