You love that burgundy! I know you do! And that dark deep purple crying for perfect application? I have it as well.
By now, the choice of Color lipsticks is crazy – in the most beautiful of ways.
You have all the reds and pinks possible, right along the funky yellow, orange or purple. Those are only worn by the Knievel’s of the make-up world.
But right along the crazier shades, there will always be a dark hue that make you want to dress in black and create the perfect smokey eye.
Yes, the Darkest Shades are a must but they are also (I’m the first to admit it) – messy.
That is the word that stop many of us of daring into that color you actually love and that does look good on you but… when you make a mistake applying that damn lipstick you want to throw it away in a make-up rage!
(You know, road rage, roid rage, make-up rage…). I coined it!
Now, seriously – before anything, you have to pull aside some time (and patience) and learn how to pull off that dark lipstick. Every. Single. Time.
- Choosing a Formula
Matte and shiny finishes are the most common in dark lipsticks.
And they don’t come in just one formula – you have them as liquid lipsticks, regular bullets, even gel!
The difference it represents can help you decide which finish.
For a day look you might want to grab the matte formula whereas for a more chic and night look, the shine is where the dark is!
- Exfoliate. Now!
To apply the perfect dark shade your lips need to be supreme!
The skin must be perfectly smooth and rid of any dry patches.
What should you do? Simple. Exfoliate every time before applying. You can exfoliate by rubbing a toothbrush over lip balm or you can use a proper product for this effect.
The main idea is – dark lipstick is easily applied if you have your lips in the perfect condition to grab the pigment.
Never forget this step, ok?
Right after you exfoliate, you have to get your skin “together” again – I say this because it should be uniformly hydrated.
If you have a lip primmer, bet on that formula – it serves to unify your skin as well as creating the perfect canvas for the lipstick.
Your lips are now prepped and smooth – time to apply lipstick!
Grab that dark color you’re dreaming of wearing but stop before you apply it from the bullet!
It can get messy if you apply dark lipstick straight from the tube so please grab a lip brush first.
Apply the shade in layers – don’t expect to go right in with the final color.
Apply a first layer, a second one to correct any mistakes and stop when you have the right color.
After applying the lip color, use a matching lip liner to go over the natural lip line.
- Prevent feathering
After you have applied both lipstick and lip liner, you have to do something that will keep the color in its place.
There’s no worse lipstick to bleed or feather than a dark shade!
Blot your lips with a tissue paper.
Powder them lightly with translucent powder right after blotting and apply more lipstick.
Why? The blotting will remove any excess product and the powder will set the lipstick in its place while keeping the final layer of lipstick locked and grabbed to the powder.
Correct any mishaps during application.
If there is color outside your lips, use a q-tip with make-up remover to clean it.
If your lip line is a little too shaky, use a small precision brush with concealer and go right along the line of color with a steady hand.
Are you in love with any dark shade lately?
