Tips for Managing a HR Department

Whether you’re starting in a new company as Manager of the HR department or you’re benefitting from a promotion, you may be wondering how to take on the responsibilities of managing a team. While HR software has eased many tasks for HR teams through automation, there are still some areas which require a managerial mindset. Here are some tips on how to be an efficient manager when working in a HR department.

Learn to Prioritise Tasks

When you’re tackling fires on a daily basis, it can be difficult to set aside the time to focus on the big picture. But as a HR manager, it’s important to find the balance between the administrative side of the role and the longer-term strategy. The strategy is what will have the most significant impact overall, however the smaller tasks still have to be completed, so learning how to Prioritise Tasks is vital as a manager of a team. Learn to spot the tasks that need to be completed immediately and those which can wait – it can feel as though everything has to be ticked off as soon as it hits the to-do list, but the reality is that a lot of tasks can wait until a more convenient time.

Build a Resource Library

For anyone in HR, staying up to date with the latest HR and employment trends, legal changes and regulations for businesses is key. Building a library of resources such as blogs, new case studies, articles and law journals can be invaluable when a situation arises that you don’t quite know how to handle straight away. Many firms provide updates through email newsletters so these can be a great way of staying up to date with the latest news and information without having to spend a penny. Free or low-cost webinars and seminars are also useful and can be really motivating too.

Follow the One-Hour Rule

Your management skills will always need to evolve and develop, so following the one-hour rule can be useful in assisting this. The rule is simple: for one hour each week, focus on managing your career and improving your skillset. This can mean things such as updating your CV so it’s always up to date or researching an area that is unfamiliar to you, but which would benefit your role day to day. It might also take the form of attending conferences, talks or workshops so you can bring new skills to your company.

Build Relationships

Working in HR may mean delving in to a lot of statistics and numbers, but this side of the job doesn’t exactly help when it comes to building strong relationships. One of the most important things you can do as a HR manager is build relationships with the people you work with, so when a new hire is going through employee onboarding, chat to them. It’s also a good idea to take part in company events, make sure you are positive and approachable so people feel they can come to you with issues they may have, and be understanding with people.
