What You Need to Know About Instagram’s New Business Tools


Ever since Facebook acquired Instagram, we’ve seen the changes and updates rolling out. One of the biggest and most controversial changes so far was the change to how your feed is displayed along with the addition of paid advertisements. The new Instagram feed algorithm changed what we see on our feed from the most current posts to posts that an algorithm believes are the most important and relevant to us based on a number of factors including our behaviors using the app. 

Business Profiles

One of the newest Instagram updates is the introduction of Business Tools which includes business specific profiles and business insights (analytics). With a business profile you can select your industry and that information will be displayed underneath your company name to distinguish your company and help viewers immediately understand what company does. 

Business profiles also feature a “Contact” button right on the top of their page, and you can choose how customers contact you – call, text, or email – with the tap of the button.  Get Directions is another button, and if pushed by the user they are transferred to their map app with your business address already input and ready to navigate.

Observe and Analyze

As a business profile, you have access to “Insights”. Insights is Instagram’s built-in analytics.  From Insights, you can monitor your follower demographics by seeing the top counties and cities that your followers are in, their gender and age. There is a chart with the times your followers are most active on Instagram, helping you plan your posts accordingly. 

Once in your Insights page, the top panel displays your weekly impressions, reach, and clicks to your website. For every image you post, you can see the breakdown of Impressions (number of times it has been seen), Reach (number of unique accounts that have seen your post), and Engagement (number of likes and comments on your post).


You also have the option to promote your posts as an advertisement, all from the Instagram app. Once you post an image, you will see the Promote button underneath the image. From there you choose the “action” that users will take when they see your image. Your Action Button options are Learn More, Watch More, Shop Now, Book Now, Sign Up, and Contact Us. You can then select for your audience to automatically be found by Instagram, or you can create your own audience requirements. Your audience can be customized by locations, interests, age, and gender.
