The Death of List Building?

Marketers have found that it’s getting harder and harder to get their subscribers to click on the link that they sent out in their Emails. Why is this so? Let’s take a look at the barriers that are causing this to happen.

1) More advanced Spam filters.

List builders work based on permission based marketing. In other words, someone gives them the permission to Send them more information by giving away their email addresses. All emails sent must comply with current CAN SPAM laws. This means that subscribers must be able unsubscribe anytime should they wish to.

This is all fine but then the bad apples have to come spoil the broth. These people are known as spammers. They ignore all laws, and send out advertisements without the permission of the email owners. Many of us have received spam emails. Knowing full well that we did not give them permission to send us such messages, we tend to delete them or simply ignore them.

In response to the growing number of spam emails each day, software developers are coming up with stronger and stronger levels of protection for spam. Even free email providers like Gmail or Yahoo are strengthening their defenses. If any email so much as look like a spam mail, the emails will either be automatically deleted or moved to the spam mail folder. In other words, the email owner never even get to see the email!

This is bad news for those who are doing it right. They find that some of the emails that they sent out get caught in the spam mail filters as well and their emails get unread. That’s why the click through rates have plummeted.

2) Greater amount of hype and crap.

Some marketers do try hard to recommend great products, but there’s too much hype. In our busy lives, we tend to ignore hype. So such emails get ignored as well. Then there are those who send out crap, trying to promote offers that are not worth promoting. No wonder people start deleting emails! No one wants to be the recipient of crappy information in this knowledge based economy. Everyone wants the most advanced, and the most valuable knowledge.

So if you want your list to continue to respond, never send out crap. Always work to send out useful and valuable content. The reason why your subscribers continue to stay on your list is because they anticipate more good stuff from you. If they stop receiving good content, they might as well unsubscribe.

3) Abuse of autoresponders.

Just because you can send them emails don’t mean that you should hammer them everyday with a sales email. Think about it. Would you send your friends (or anyone you know) an email everyday to sell them something? Of course you wouldn’t! I promise you, your relationships will go down the drain if you do that.

And when it comes to list building, if you don’t have a good relationship with your list, you don’t own a list. After all, you can’t make any money out of that list!
