The Power of Aloe Vera Juice
Aloe Vera juice has many benefits to the human body. An analysis of the Aloe Vera plant shows it is made up from a large number of mucopolysaccharides (basic sugars) which are found in every cell in the body.
Aloe also contains large numbers of nutrients including vitamins E, C, B1, 2, 3, and 6 as well as iron, manganese, calcium and zinc. Seven essential amino acids and fatty acids are also found in Aloe Vera. It comes closer than any other known plant to the duplication of life’s essential substances in the biochemistry of the human body.
In which area Aloe Vera juice works?
Aloe Vera seemed to work in two definite areas, firstly on damaged epithelial tissue and secondly on the immune system.
An epithelium is an anatomical term that is defined as “a layer of cells that covers the surface of the body or lines a cavity that connects with it”. So the skin, the largest of our body organs, is the largest epithelial tissue. It connects through the mouth with the lining of the gastro-intestinal tract as well as the lining of the nose and sinuses, the lining of the lungs and the genital tract.
It is not surprising, therefore, that Aloe Vera will speed up the healing of a burn or some damaged eczematous skin just as well as it will heal a mouth ulcer or even a stomach ulcer or a problem of the bowel lining – all epithelial tissue.
Conditions which are caused by a disordered immune system such as asthma and some forms of arthritis also seem to benefit from Aloe Vera.
How to prepare Aloe Vera plant for juicing?
Unfortunately, Aloe Vera plant will only grow in warm, fertile areas. If you have access to a mature plant then the best way is to cut a leaf off it and fillet the leaf to remove the green outer portion that contains aloin, leaving the gel that remains in the leaf. It is much easier to crush the whole leaves than to fillet each leaf separately. But if it is done, the aloin is retained, which makes the juice extremely bitter.
The gel remains thick when the leaf is first cut, but after a few minutes, an enzymatic reaction causes it to become liquid and freely run out. It is this 100 percent pure liquid that you collect. Because bacteria can thrive on this raw liquid, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and sodium benzoate should be added as preservatives. Sodium benzoate is effective in very low quantities, and is therefore perhaps the best and safest method for preserving Aloe Vera juice.
Industrially processed Aloe Vera Juice
For most of us it is necessary to buy a preserved Aloe Vera juice. One of the most honored methods of preparing Aloe Vera juice is used by Nature’s Sunshine. This involves filleting the leaf, removing the green outer portion, which contains the aloin, and leaving just the gel that exists in the leaf. That gel hangs together by itself when the leaf is first filleted. Just a few minutes later, the enzymes in the gel will break the structure down so that it will become a running fluid instead of a standing gel.
Nature’s Sunshine’s Aloe Vera juice is 100% Aloe. It hasn’t been processed to remove all of the active constituents to make the flavor pleasant, but instead they have left the active principles. Some people dilute the Aloe by putting two ounces of Aloe Vera juice in a glass of fruit juice or in some other liquid. That basically does the same thing as purchasing a product that is 10-15 % Aloe Vera.
Aloe Vera juice and Drug Interaction
People who are under medication should consult his/her physician before consuming Aloe Vera juice. Misuse or overuse of Aloe Vera juice can interact with the following drugs:
Betamethasone Systemic, Bisoprolol Fumarate/Hydrochlorothiazide Chlorothiazide, Chlorthalidone, Cortisone Oral, Dexamethasone Systemic, Digitoxin, Digoxin, Enalapril/Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), Fludrocortisone, Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), Hydrochlorothiazide/Triamterene, Hydrocortisone Systemic, Indapamide, Lisinopril/Hydrochlorothiazide, Methylprednisolone, Metolazone, Moexipril Hydrochloride/Hydrochlorothiazide, Prednisolone Systemic, Prednisone, Propranolol/Hydrochlorothiazide, Spironolactone/Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), Triamcinolone Systemic, Valsartan/Hydrochlorothiazide.
Interaction between Aloe Vera juice and these drugs can cause the loss of potassium (required for proper heart function) and intensify the potassium-depleting effects of this medication and may lead to toxicity.
