MAYA CODICES : 1000 YEARS OLD

Mexican scientists and historians confirmed the antiquity of the Maya codice (Codex), dates back a thousand years ago and represents the oldest prehispanic text that has been recorded.

“Mexico’s Codex Maya is authentic and it is displayed as the oldest legible pre-Hispanic manuscript of the American continent,” said anthropologist Diego Prieto Hernández, general director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) of Mexico.

According to studies, the Mayan Codex, formerly known as Grolier, is prehispanic and has an estimated antiquity radiocarbon between 1021 and 1154 of our era (Early Postclassic period), while it should have a useful life of approximately 104 years. All this makes it the oldest known prehispanic codex.

The 10 sheets of the codex -which measure, on average, 12.5 centimeters in length and are theorized must have belonged to a set of at least 20 sheets- are supported by three layers of amate paper bark.

The study led by the physical anthropologist of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), Josefina Bautista, concluded that the features of the human figures of the codex belong to the Mayan-Toltec style of the Early Postclassic, and do not bear similarities with the Mayan naturalism of the Late Classic.
