Reality is sometimes more bizarre than wildest fantasies. This is easily verifiable by reading the article about most original models of digital photo frames that are currently on the market.
The digital revolution in amateur photography in a short time radically changed conventional ideas about receiving, processing, printing and distributing photos. Among other things, the transition to digital technology in photography has contributed to development of fundamentally new types of electronic devices, such as Digital Photo Frames.
Manufacturers quickly appreciated the potential of increasing functionality of these devices. Currently, even the low-end models of digital photo frames are essentially a multi-functional media players that can play not only graphics but also audio and video files of various formats. Available solutions for data storage are: 1. built-in memory 2. multi-format card readers and USB which allows you to connect removable memory cards and external storage devices 3. Wi-Fi technology opens up opportunity to use media from PC and internet sources, like cloud/website/virtual data storage. Remote control makes it possible to easily control all functions without even standing from your couch.
It would seem, that there’s nothing to add on top of existing variety of functions – from the perspective of end-users it’s already overkill. However, manufacturers have their own logic. For them, it’s much more important to invent something that will distinguish their own products among hundreds of similar competing models. Sometimes they don’t even care if it benefits the consumer – most important is if the new product has attracted attention. So developers are scratching their heads thinking what else they could have implemented in digital photo frames. In this review, I have gathered information on several models, equipped with very unusual (of course, for this type of device) functions.
Scan from e-frame
The company Lite-On IT Corporation has expanded the product range of digital photo frames. New products were released by Skyla brand. For them not to go unnoticed, they implemented a very unusual feature: the ability to scan 10×15 cm color photos. Slot for scanning photos is located at the bottom of the frame (below the display screen). Scanning resolution is 600 ppi; images are saved in the internal memory of the device.
As for the other features of the model Skyla Memoir, it is equipped with 8-inch LCD display (resolution – 800×600 pixels), 1 GB of internal flash memory and a card reader for removable storage devices (CompactFlash formats, SD / MMC, Memory Stick and xD-Picture). The device also has a USB port for PC connection and a built-in USB host controller, allowing you to connect USB flash drives. In addition photo frame allows you to play compressed MP3 audio files, as well as Motion JPEG video formats, MPEG-1 and MPEG-4. Among the additional provided features are alarm clock, calendar and slideshow mode.
Like photo? Print it!
An adequate response to photo frame with built-in scanner would be a release of the model equipped with a printing device. Sony has introduced its hybrid version of the digital photo frames and photo printers. Notable that this device has received index DPP-F700, and in accordance with the system used in company’s product classification, it formally belongs to the category of photo printers. And looks DPP-F700 model more like a portable photo printer, with a widescreen 7-inch LCD display on top of it. The wide base provides good stability and it is possible to change the angle of the 800×480 pixel resolution display. For media file storage device provides 1 GB of internal flash memory; There are slots for following formats of memory cards: SD / SDHC, MMC, Memory Stick, CompactFlash and xD-Picture. This model provides high-quality and resistant to moisture images on 10×15 cm photo paper. The DPP-F700 model provided with rotation function, zoom and cropping, as well as automatic photo enhancement mode. On the control panel there is a special button that allows “one-touch” print of the image that at the moment is on the screen. However, before you start printing, the device must be connected to special paper tray. Among additional provided features are built-in clock and calendar with a variety of visualization options for date and time.
News instead of photos
Another original idea – the ability to view the built-in TV screen and video from external sources.
frame, equipped with a built-in digital TV tuner of DVB-T standard. Users beside viewing, can also record TV programs to the internal memory or on a flash card. This model also has a FM-radio (with support for RDS) and AV-in port, that allows you to watch video on a screen picture frame from external sources such as a DVD-player or camcorder. Model Asuka SK700 is equipped with 7-inch LCD 800×480 pixel display, built-in speakers, 2 or 4 GB of internal flash memory and a slot for SD / SDHC / MMC removable memory cards (up to 32 GB ). Provided USB interface for PC connection. The device is equipped with the playback functions of graphics, audio and video files of various formats.
Unusual e-frame device
This gadget is not easily categorized: it combines following features: weather station, clock and mini photo frame. On the front panel there are three small-sized display screens (1.8 inch). One of them shows the current time, day of the week, temperature and humidity, the other – weather forecast, and the third is for viewing photos. The device provides 16 MB of internal memory for image storage and USB interface for PC connection (to download images). Size – 80x150x25 mm. Due to the built-in battery, device is operable in a wireless mode.
Tv Picture Frame
Sungale 19 inch Digital Photo Frame has more in common with Television than e-frame. It features Wi-Fi connection and free personal cloud storage. So basically, you can transfer photo in real-time from any device to cloud storage and then view from electronic photo frame. It can be fully synced with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+ etc. You can even use this device as a conventional Tv – watch movies from Netflix and so on. Technical specifications include: HD 19-inch screen, built-in 8GB memory, SD card slot, USB port.
Live Camera to Digital Picture Frame
Motorola MFV700 gives us another interesting way to use digital photo frames. What they offer, is real-time translation on frame’s screen from remote video camera. In fact, half of the display show usual photo images, while other half – live video-in via camera. The technology used behind it is DECT 6.0 and both video and photos show simultaneously. Wireless camera is supplied with e-frame. Other features include temperature monitoring and night-vision, so it can be useful if you have a baby or someone to look after.
Those are probably most unusual ways to use digital frame, and undoubtedly there are others we are only going to hear about. But that’s it for now. If you come up with any funny unorthodox ideas to use digital frame, feel free to contact manufacturers, I’m sure they’ll consider them.
