Discovering Baghdad Street – Food Trail

Discovering Baghdad Street – Food Trail

Tucked away in Kampong Glam, some of you may know Baghdad Street, with its line of traditional shop houses, as a place influenced by Arabic culture. Other than being a landmark with a rich heritage, Baghdad Street also features quirky and unique food eateries that are worth visiting for a weekend breather.

#1 No Name Teh Sarabat Stall

In a hidden corner of Baghdad Street is a milk tea (Sarabat) stall. While it may not seem like anything special, it is actually one of the oldest surviving Teh Sarabat Stall, and has been established since 1956. Given that it does not even have a signboard, it has become known to patrons as “No Name Teh Sarabat”. Even now, the stall does not have a sign board but still remain well-known among foodies!

Teh Sarabat stalls like this one serve Teh Tarik, which is brewed Cylon Tea mixed with condensed milk and evaporated milk. Teh Tarik, like the name suggests, is ‘pulled tea’, and it is ‘pulled’ back and forth between two tins to cool the drink down and give it a foamy froth on the surface of the tea.

Other than the cheap, delicious Teh Tarik served there, it is a good place to chill and relax, with its quiet ambience and other tasty Indian snacks that can be bought with the frothy tea.

Along Baghdad Street is a Meditarrean Restaurant named “Ambrosia”. According to ancient Greek mythology, “Ambrosia” is referred to as food and drink of the Gods, and whoever that consumes it will be blessed with immortaility.

Inspired by the Meditarrean region, you can expect to find cuisines from Greece, Italy, France, Eygpt, Morrocco and Italy. The restaurant also believes in the Meditarrean lifestyle of taking time to relax in the company of dear friends and loved ones. Being halal-certified, Ambrosia welcomes all who yearn to take a break from work and the daily stresses of life to enjoy good food with close friends and family.

Another eatery worth visiting along Baghdad Street is a boutique-café named La Marelle. Upon stepping into it, be whisked away into a children storybook, filled with white fluffy clouds and bright, vibrant colours. The entire of the beautiful interior is an artwork created from an artist’s imagination. With all the fun little details found in corners of the café, it is a vibrant, cheerful place for everyone to hang out and have a good time.

Other than the artwork that brings a smile to your face, your tastebuds will also be immensely satisfied with the wide array of food, drinks and desserts that the café has to offer.
