On Sunday, protesting farmers organized a four-hour rail roko in 62 locations throughout Punjab in response to calls made by the non-political Samyukt Kisan Morcha and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM). A number of farmers in Haryana are said to have been arrested by the police while traveling to the protest locations in Dabwali and Ellenabad. KMM claims that a similar incident was reported at Dausa in Rajasthan. In the late evening, the farmers were set free. Farmers Protest The protest in Punjab lasted from midday till four o’clock in the afternoon. The agitation was organized in 52 areas by the KMM and SKM (non-political), and in the remaining 10 locations by five additional SKM-affiliated farmer unions: BKU Ugrahan, BKU Dakaunda. That being said, this call does not include the main SKM organization. The Punjabi locations of the agitation were Mullanpur, Samrala, Jagraon, Devidaspura, and Jahangir in Amritsar; Jalandhar, Jalandhar cantonment, Phagwara, Phillaur, and Dinanagar in Pathankot; Mansa, Sangrur, Bathinda, Barnala, Fazilka railway stations, Basti Tenka Wali, Mallanwala, and Guru-Har-Sahai in Ferozepur district; Dagru in Moga; Malaut in Muktsar; Khadoor Sahib, Taran Taran; Batala in Gurdaspur; and Rajpura, Patiala, and Shambhu railway stations in Patiala. Only three locations in Haryana—the Mohda railway crossing in Ambala, Manakpur in Panchkula, and Sarsini in Ambala—where the BKU-Shaheed Bhagat Singh held protests—were reported to have rail roko at the time this report was filed. Not only were inter-city lines impacted, but the main lines as well. Pandher was at the major Delhi line station, Devidaspura railway station in Amritsar. “We had announced the rail roko on March 3,” he stated. Although sitting on the tracks doesn’t make us joyful, it’s the only way we can make ourselves heard when the Union government has been turning a blind eye to our demands.” Jagjit Singh Dallewal, coordinator of SKM (non-political) said, “Protests were held nationwide which clearly indicates that Farmers from all over the nation are taking part in this aandolan, and they want the government to guarantee their income, which the ruling party is trying to avoid. Who is taking part in the protest against rail roko? The Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan), Bharti Kisan Union (Dakaunda-Dhaner), and the Krantikari Kisan Union, which is linked with the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, would also take part in the ‘rail roko’ demonstration. Although they are not a part of the “Delhi Chalo” campaign, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha has shown support for the farmers who have set a camp at the border crossings of Shambhu and Khanauri. What demands are farmers making, and why are they protesting? Farmers are en masse protesting and calling on the Center to recognize their demands. Legislation guaranteeing MSPs a legal standing for their crops is one of the main demands. • They further seek the discharge of farm debts, pensions for farmers and agricultural workers, and the implementation of the MSP recommendations made by the Swaminathan Commission. • In addition, farmers are requesting that the Center provide “justice” for the Lakhimpur Kheri violence victims.
