The new double-single from Brooklyn-based band Rat Palace, “Triple Tarp” and “Toy Soldier” continue to showcase the band’s melodic rock strengths. The release follows up their debut single “Look My Way,” which melded ’90s alt-rock nostalgia and trip-hop; that one caught our ears last month, and these two compel with similarly memorable results amidst differing rock directions.

“Triple Tarp” grips with a psych-rock and post-punk intertwining, infusing lush vocals and serene guitar textures. Meanwhile, “Toy Soldier” embraces a more intense outpouring, combining a punk-ready vigor with contemplatively subdued vocals; a consistent melodic force takes hold within the lush vocal balance and more aggressive guitars, beautifully immersive in their contrasts.

Serene guitar twangs and submerged vocals make for a thoroughly meditative intrigue throughout “Triple Tarp.” Solemn bass plucks descend into the trickling guitar lines amidst occasionally escalating vocals, producing a sound fondly reminiscent of Deerhunter. “Toy Soldier” ticks up the energy for an enthused hookiness, playing with replay-inducing effect. These are two standout success from Rat Palace, who continue to impress.
