Tips for Solo Volleyball Training

Volleyball Training: Solo Practice Tips

Volleyball season is fast approaching and many players, both novice and experienced want to “tune up” their body and improve their Volleyball skills. Unfortunately, sometimes you just can’t make it to the court to practice.

Fortunately, there are Drills and exercises for Volleyball Training that can be performed at home or away from the court. We will take a short look at these drills and exercises for solo practice. As always, it’s important to warm up your body with stretches before you begin your workout.

Volleyball Training Drills

When practicing volleyball drills, it is important to be aware of your technique. When practicing solo, it’s good to take the extra time to observe and correct your technique for setting, serving, and passing.

Serving Drills

Practice serving by distancing yourself from a wall, aiming for a spot (as you would on the court) and practice serving so you hit that spot. Be aware of your hand position and try to follow through as you aim for your spot on the wall. Hopefully, you won’t have to run too far to retrieve your ball! If you are able to practice on a court with someone to retrieve the ball for you, even better!

Setting Drills

The first group of setting drills is to warm up your hands. Start by performing quick wall sets for about 45 seconds. Follow this by increasing your distance from the wall and setting for 60 seconds, then take another step back and do the wall sets for 90 seconds.

The second group of sets is done lying on your back with knees bent. Vary the speed and height of your sets, in groups of 100.

Passing Drills

Passing-to-self drills involve performing the passing-to-self motion but with varying the feet. You can pass to yourself with your feet stationary, moving forward and backward or side-to-side. Wall passes can be practiced either forward or diagonally as you would in a game. Move from wall passes into a combination of pass-set-pass against the wall. Finally, you can practice passing and setting to yourself.

Hitting Drills

Hitting drills can be performed by hitting against a wall. Remember to also practice your swing arm approach to a hit.
