When I was researching places to visiting during our weekend break to Copenhagen, I came across this video from   Condé Nast Traveler on Facebook about the Frederiksborg Castle.  And after watching the magical 3 minutes below I was sold on adding it as a ‘must see’ to our Copenhagen list.

You’ll want to make a day of it, as there is over 500 years of Danish history to explore. As you arrive at the castle, the details and size were really staggering – from the large fountain that greets guests to the high turrets – this castle was grand and even a bit imposing.  Even arriving is a feat as the castle sits tucked away on a small lake, it felt even grand arriving as a tourist.  

(It isn’t too surprising as the castle was built to show wealth as well as impress or intimidate guests.)

Now, it’s a grand National History Museum showcasing incredible art and architecture in one place.   

Once you are done exploring the castle, make your way to the formal gardens.  The gardens reminded me of Versailles, which were perfectly symmetrical and tended to.  I found out later that the gardens at Frederiksborg Castle are referred to the Nordic Versailles, with the gardens at the heart of the estate.  And from the gardens you have a beautiful view of the lake and entire castle, which is simply lovely. 

The garden cafe was a lovely spot to take a break, and enjoy some smørrebrød or open faced sandwiches, a Danish speciality. We opted to have one platter of smørrebrød which included smoked salmon, egg and potato all on rye bread and was a break lunch after exploring the grounds of the castle. And for being in a fairly touristy spot – it was pretty well priced at about £17.  

There were centuries of history in this castle – so be sure to plan on spending enough time there – easily a half day excursion when you include a garden stroll and over 500 years of Danish history to see!  

As part of your admission ticket you can request a free audiotour, which is worth it as many of the rooms had little to no information.  

Getting to Frederiksborg Castle from central Copenhagen couldn’t be easier – making it a perfect day trip out of Copenhagen. Take S-train (S-Tog) line A to Hillerød station (around 40 minutes). From there it is a lovely 15-minute walk from the station to the castle, which is sign posted throughout.
