Jamoralin replaces Calonge as PHL Consul General for Midwest

Filipino Star News | Filipino-American Community Newspaper

Consul General Gina Jamoralin, who is currently assigned in Honolulu, will replace Generoso DG Calonge as Consul General for the Midwest.

This was learned from Romulo Victor M. Israel, acting head of post, in a reply to a query sent to the Consulate General by the Filipino Star News.

Last Jan. 11, Calonge announced he is vacating the position. He made the announcement during the Consulate General of the Philippines’ “Ika-31 na Pagkikita sa Konsulado” (monthly meeting with members of the Filipino community in Midwest) held at the Kalayaan Hall of the Consulate General’s office in Chicago.

The “Pagkikita” event was highlighted by a farewell message from Consul General Generoso DG Calonge to the community.

He has stepped down from the position, and Romulo Victor Israel Jr. now serves as the acting head of post. Calonge’s term as Consul General for the Midwest ended seven months ago, but because the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) failed to appoint his successor, he had remained in his post in a holdover capacity.

According to the Hawaii Filipino Chronicle, Consul General Jamoralin has traveled throughout Asia, the Pacific and Europe during the course of her diplomatic career. Her previous foreign postings include the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo, Japan from 2006 to 2012 and the Philippine Embassy in Bucharest, Romania from 1996 to 2003.

She was most recently the Executive Director and Assistant Secretary of the Office of American Affairs of the Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs from September 2012 to July 2014. She was also the director for trade and economics at the Office of United Nations and International Organizations and special assistant to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Senior Official.

She earned her Master’s of Business Administration from McGill University in Tokyo, her PhD in economics from the University of Santo Tomas, her Master’s of Public Administration from the University of the Philippines and her Bachelor’s degree in economics from UP.

During the Pagkikita meeting, Consul General Calonge expressed his appreciation of the support of Filipino community leaders and members for him and the Consulate General throughout the years.

He hoped that such degree of support would also be given by the community to his replacement.

Members of the community took turns in giving heartwarming remarks about their experiences working or transacting business with the Consul General. They also expressed their sincere thanks to the Consul General for his outstanding accomplishments and commitment as a public servant.

A video clip on the major events the Consul General had attended was shown, as well as community events organized and participated in by the Consulate General.

Closing the “Pagkikita,” Consul Ericka Anna T. Abad informed the guests of the Consulate’s upcoming activities.

In observance of a tradition in Filipino community gatherings, photo opportunities and a light reception capped the evening event.
