Does Wakame Cure Herpes?

Wakame (Undaria pinnatifida) sea weed has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on both herpes type 1 and 2, in clinical study.

In a study, 15 patients who had active herpes and 6 who had latent herpes were given a proprietary preparation of Tasmanian wakame seaweeds (GFS extract), in an effort to assess its ‘effects on the healing or re-emergence of Herpetic infections’. The test was specifically in relation to herpes simplex 1 (HSV 1), herpes simplex 2 (HSV 2), Epstein-Barr virus and herpes zoster. During the study the subjects’ human T cell mitogenicity and anti-Herpes activity were monitored.

The results showed that ingestion of GFS had inhibitory effects on the reactivation of the virus and was associated with increased rate of healing after Herpetic outbreaks.

Conclusion: GFS extract potently inhibited Herpes virus in vitro, and had mitogenic effects on human T cells.
