How To Make an Inexpensive Gown Appear Luxe

Look, we get it: Wedding dresses don’t come cheap. You pay for all that tulle and lace, and that number can easily cross into the triple or even quadruple digit territory. With a price tag like that, your wedding Gown better write your vows and plan your entire big day, too!

However, not all brides choose to drop some serious dough. Whether you’re on a tight budget or would prefer to spend big bucks on other aspects of your wedding, a gown isn’t your biggest expense — and that’s totally cool, too!

That doesn’t mean that you have to settle. A less expensive gown doesn’t have to look like it was a budget decision. After all, no one has to know the true cost of your dress besides you. And trust us, with these tricks, your guests will be left in utter awe (and your mother-in-law won’t stop asking how much you really spent.)

Don’t be afraid of straps

Think of it this way: if you’re not used to wearing strapless dresses while out and about, you won’t be comfortable wearing one for an entire day in front of friends and family. Nothing cheapens a dress more than looking and feeling uncomfortable, so do yourself a favor and opt for straps if you think you’ll need them. Besides, looking down every thirty seconds to make sure your bra isn’t exposed to the world will get tiring after a few minutes.

Don’t over-accessorize

If your gown doesn’t quite feel like you, you might be tempted to throw on a belt. And earrings. And a chunky necklace. A couple of bracelets for good measure. Oh, and a flower crown.

Pause.

Too many accessories can cheapen the whole look and feel of the dress. Instead of going for all the accessories you can pile on, opt for one or two understated pieces that still pack a punch. A bejeweled belt will add to the fit of the dress, for example, while a pair of sparkling studs will look stunning on slicked back hairstyles.

Invest in good undies

Sure, you might want to look sexy underneath your dress for your wedding night, but that lingerie is rarely flattering — or comfortable. You’ll spend all day tugging and pinching at your corset or garter belt. Be sure to head to a bridal lingerie specialist and not just any lingerie store, as they will fit you for a custom bra and be an invaluable resource for tips and tricks on both looking and feeling comfortable on the big day.

Don’t skimp on alterations

Perhaps the most important tip to remember is that nearly any article of clothing lies in the fit. The same goes for wedding dresses. Even if you didn’t spend a lot of money on your dress (or if it was a hand-me-down) be sure to invest in alterations that will make the dress look like it was made for you, and you alone. A great fit will mask a cheap fabric or awkward beading, but even the most luxe dress will look cheap if it doesn’t look like it fits you properly.
