The History of a Cuddledown Bestseller

It was only a few days into the year of 1989 – textile vendors and business owners were gathering from far and wide at Heimtextil, an international trade fair that takes place every January in Frankfurt, Germany.

Among the crowd of vendors and business people was Kate Jackson – a Seamstress at Cuddledown who got her start in the fall of 1983.

Kate – accompanied by Cuddledown’s new president – set out to find a piece of art that would look good on our luxurious bedding.

They weren’t having much luck, when they came across a canvas covered in bold, colorful impressionist flowers. The two instantly knew they had to have the print – “we thought it would be a good seller” Kate recalls.

“Good seller” turned out to be quite the understatement, as the print now known as “Monet” would become a Cuddledown bestseller for years to come.

The Monet print is French designed, and inspired by the famous Austrian artist Gustav Klimt’s “Flower Garden”.

After being printed in France, and finished in Portugal, the first line of Monet bedding arrived at Cuddledown and was ready ready to go.

Shams, pillowcases, and duvet covers were the first pieces of bedding that the Monet print was available on, which debuted in Cuddledown’s 1990 catalog.

The Monet products were a hit, and it wasn’t long until our Product Development team decided it was time to expand the collection to include bedskirts, quilted coverlets, and even new colorways such as yellow and blue.

Since its first appearance, the Monet has been a favorite among customers and a staple in nearly every catalog.

To this very day, the Monet collection – much like Kate – continues to play an integral role in the success of Cuddledown.

Do you have any pieces of our Monet Bedding? Any other artists whose work you’d like to see featured on next our collection? Let us know in the comments!
