Intro to Hatha Yoga

Practice

Hatha Yoga is mainly comprised of two major components: breathing practices (pranayama) and the postures (asanas). The breathing practices are to prepare your mind and body while the asanas are performed to tone and strengthen your body.

In this yoga style, you need to hold a specific posture for a particular period of time while focusing on your breathing pattern to promote spirituality. Difference to other yoga styles

Hatha yoga is basically the beginning phase for most other yoga styles. One needs to practice this technique to ready their body and mind for the other asanas that they will perform during the yoga practice. Hatha yoga is a way to bring balance yourself while other yoga styles help in stimulating your body and mind.

One major difference between other yoga styles is that hatha yoga is something that is essentially a part of all the other yoga styles like Ashtanga Yoga. But, you don’t inculcate other yoga postures or techniques when practicing this yoga style. So, in a way, hatha yoga is the start of any yoga practice. This is why it is imperative that you master all the postures of hatha yoga and are able to transform smoothly before you can start thinking of learning other yoga styles.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t learn other yoga styles without doing hatha yoga first, but it sure would make your journey as a yogi much easier.

  • It can be time-consuming because you need to practice daily and master the postures for it to truly be effective.
  • You can hurt yourself if you don’t hold the position correctly and could risk a grave injury
  • It can be slightly intimidating and discomforting at the first which might result in you overdoing it.

It can often leave you dehydrated and dizzy after the first few sessions
