Representatives of Reform Jews Speak out on Alito

Reported today on US Newswire was that representatives of various congregations of Reform Jews came together to speak out on Judge Samuel Alito. Delegates from over 500 congregations came together to vote overwhelmingly against Alito. They do not believe that he is the best person for the job. The people that voted to oppose him feel that he will not protect their fundamental rights.

They fear Alito will not defend women'’s rights, civil rights, and the rights of the federal government will change. Before these people voted they heard arguments both for and against Alito'’s nomination. The main message of the meeting seemed to be that they respect Alito as a Judge but disagree with his views on public rights and issues. Many believe that Alito's personal views will hinder his fair and impartial judgment. They fear that he will rollback fundamental rights that have become precendent in recent years. The group says they "cannot remain on the sidelines during this crucial debate, one that carries implications for virtually every issue of core concern to our Movement."

One must remember to approach this story with a wary eye. This is not to say all jews oppose Alito, this is merely a group who purportes to represent all reform jews but it is only 2,000 'delegates' that voted on this resolution. So the question behind the bench asks, is this the true feeling of jews Americaica or only these voters?
