What my weightloss journey has taught me.

When I first started my Weightloss journey 4 years ago, I was only concerned about one thing –> to lose weight. That was my focus and at the beginning, it didn’t matter how I was losing weight, as long as I was losing it.

I did every fad Diet under the sun –> the Cambridge diet, the juice diet, detox teas, diet pills. You name it, I probably did it and the one thing I learnt from all these diets was they don’t work. Sure I lost a couple of pounds on them but once I went back to eating normal foods the weight went back on. And then some.

I realised that losing weight is more like a marathon rather than a sprint and in order to keep putting one foot in front of the other, you need to enjoy it.

I quickly realised that food shouldn’t be used as a punishment, nor should it be used as a reward. I tried to cut my emotional ties with food and instead ate because I enjoyed it rather than because I was bored, stressed or upset –> I’m not perfect all the time, I ate a whole bowl of pick and mix sweets at the weekend because I was on and I felt sorry for myself but hey, that’s life! I also started to cook more and I’ve discovered that I quite like it –> I like finding new recipes and coming up with healthy alternatives of my favourite foods. FYI pitta pizzas are amazing!

I now look at food and weightloss differently. Instead of being so focused on the scales, I’m more focused about how I feel. I want to nourish my body and feed it with good nutritious food that I know will make me feel better –> don’t get me wrong, I still eat pizza, cookies and drink cocktails but this is all part of the 80 / 20 rule. Eat well 80% of the time and treat yourself 20% of the time –> it’s all about balance.

Someone once told me “the more you focus on losing weight, the less you’ll lose” and I completely agree. Instead of wanting to lose weight, I focused on feeling better, having more energy, being fitter and healthier. Eat well and move more became my moto –> I tried to make good choices that I knew would nourish my body while still enjoying what I ate.

My wellbeing project was born because of this and although I fall off the wagon sometimes, I feel better than I ever have! I’m able to run half marathons (and hopefully a marathon in April), I have more energy and I feel much better about myself. Oh, and I’ve lost 4 stone.

I might have lost weight but I have gained so much more and that to me is the most important.

Do you have any good weightloss tips?

What made you lose weight?
