Maslenitsa 2017: where to go out and eat pancakes in Kyiv

During this week Ukrainians celebrate one of the oldest Slavic holidays – Maslenitsa. Since ancient times, this rite is associated with the beginning of spring, joy and Folk festivals. Our ancestors not only baked Pancakes and burned an effigy of winter. They also… greeted the New Year. Thеy believed that this transition has a deep sense. It means the birth of life through the struggle, death and resurrection.

Today, many rituals connected with the celebration of Maslenitsa , which are now a history. The only one thing that is unchanged – the atmosphere of fun, national holiday and, of course, the traditional pancakes baking. We will tell you where to eat delicious festive cakes in Kyiv on this weekend.

Pyrohovo

At the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life you will see the ancient ritual Kolodiy. Ancient Slavs considered him a god of love, marriage, health and harmony. Action will take place on the territory of the exhibition “Middle Naddniprianshchyna.”
On Singing Field you will see various folk entertainment: tug of war, competitions on a log and fighting with snowballs. You also can see performances of folk groups there. On this holiday you can eat pancakes, delicious dumplings, enjoy homemade drinks and other Ukrainian dishes.

Park of Shevchenko

Here also  will be festivities this weekend also. And if your main goal on Maslenitsa is to eat pancakes and taste different kinds of traditional pastries and sweets, then you should visit this place. Visitors of the park will be entertained with hot drinks. Among entertainment provided you will see workshops on crafts and performances by folk dance groups.

In 2017 celebration of Maslyna in Cossack village will be held in Ukrainian folk style. The main slogan of the event: “Ukrainian vareniki against Russian pancakes!” During the celebration guests will taste vareniki with cheese and pancakes with various fillings. You must taste there the local mead and brand cherry brandy. And if you still have power ride on swings with celebrating guests.

If you want to see Maslenitsa celebrations with a fire show, horse-trick elements and various contests – you should definitely visit the  “Kievska Rus” Park. Ethno complex “Ukrainian Village”

In the “Ukrainian Village” Maslenitsa will be traditionally celebrated as the holiday of  Kolodiy. You will find dancing, traditional games and clinging bachelor pad – an old Slavic tradition there. For children organizers prepared workshops on crafts, souvenirs and tasty treats outdoors. Everyone traditionally will burn a straw effigy of Winter in the evening .

Ostrich farm in Yasnogorodsk

You can take part of the traditional master classes and eating pancakes at the weekend. Also you can climb to a high pillar for gifts. For those who want for a relax holiday, the organizers will prepare performances by folk groups and a free tour of the farm. The highlight of the evening will be a burning of straw Morena’s doll – a symbol of winter.
