Plastics are improving the Overall Driving Experience

At the November 2017 Society of Plastics Engineers’ Design in Plastics Conference, Chris Lefteri Design Ltd asked people how they felt inside automobiles and how they wanted to feel in the future.

The designers believed there had to more than just a getting from one place to another. An automobile should be like an annex of a person’s home. The automobile should offer comfort, stimulate the senses, and allow the driver the ability to achieve goal. To do all that, the automobile would need some sort of separation screen, which allows a bit of the outside in, but not too much. The solution: plastics.

The ideas offered included:

o Ultra-violet responsive plastic additives for heat insulation.

o Durable and soft polyurethanes for heightened comfort.

o Vibration Dampening foam for sound insulation.

o Plastics with odor-control and antibacterial functions.

o Transparent and easy-to-form polycarbonate to create lightweight scenic views.

o Polycarbonate with light-diffusing hues for ambiance and personalization.

o Thermoplastic polyurethane for resilience and scratch resistance.
