Joyce Lee, posted on behalf on her worker on the Taxi Driver Facebook group. She wrote in the facebook post asking if this was the normal fare from airport to Sungei Tengah. From the receipt, we noticed a $10 Location surcharge which is unusually high. The location surcharge for Changi Airport is usually $3 or a maximum of $5. Several taxi drivers slammed the driver for overcharging the passenger on Facebook. It was later revealed that ComfortDelGro has terminated the service hiring agreement with the driver. This was not his first offence of overcharging customers.

What can consumers do if they faced such situation?

In recent years, several consumers have found great success in sharing their unpleasant encounter on social media. While this would put them at risk for being labeled as “Complain King/Queen” ,at times, it is a move that has to be taken. In particular, the above case was a legitimate case of a taxi driver overcharging his customers.

Consumers can also file a report to Consumer Association of Singapore (CASE),which is a non-profit organization helping protect consumers interests in Singapore. In 2017, there were 1,522 filed cases in which 731 were classified as assisted case. Majority of complaints to CASE were related to the motorcars industry.

Is this Taxi Driver Overcharging an Isolated case?

Yes! Taxi drivers in Singapore are known to be law-abiding. While it is possible to have few other taxi drivers committing such act, majority of taxi drivers are very honest. I personally have several positive experience with taxi drivers who were extremely polite and friendly. The only unpleasant case i remembered was when a taxi driver took a longer route and the fares was 2.5 times the usual price. The trip was from Pasir Ris to Bedok. The driver was driving around the neighbourhood and took the longest route ever possible.
