The bill would have removed low-level sex offenders from the registry after 10 or 20 years. However, finance officials say ongoing technology costs and processing tens of thousands of requests would cost tens of millions of dollars.
State Senator Scott Wiener says the state’s Sex Crimes registry is broken. Because of its size, it actually hampers criminal investigations. Currently, the state has more than 100,000 offenders.
