Essential Oils for Energy Cleansing

Have you ever walked into your home and noticed that the air feels stale or stifling? Maybe you’ve had a big argument with a family member or roommate and the Energy of your space feels heavy or oppressive, or you’ve just moved into a new home and it doesn’t feel quite like “your” space yet: You may feel like you literally need to clear the air.

In the same way that it is important to regularly clean your kitchen, bathroom, and floors, it is important to clean the energy of your home. By clearing out any negative energy (also called qi in traditional Chinese medicine), we can welcome fresh, new, positive energy into our space.

One of my favorite ways to purify the energy of my home is to use Essential Oils. Certain oils have properties that help to clear negative energy, and they make your home smell wonderful in the process!

Essential Oils to Purify Your Space

CLARY SAGE

White sage has been used by many Native American tribes in a spiritual ritual known as smudging. Smudging is a way to connect to the spiritual realm and request protection and cleansing of your person and space. Clary sage essential oil has similar purifying properties and helps to clear out any old or negative energy. Clary sage is also known to reduce stress and depression.

LAVENDER

Lavender helps to clear negative energy in a gentle, soothing way. It promotes calm, improves sleep, and increases feelings of happiness and well being. In traditional Chinese medicine theory, lavender helps to move qi, so it is fantastic for clearing stuck energy from our bodies and homes.

PALO SANTO

Palo santo translates to “holy wood.” In Incan tradition, it was burned as an energy cleanser during spiritual ceremonies. It clears energy tainted by conflict and attracts positive energy.

How to Use Essential Oils for Cleansing Your Home

I like to make a purifying spray (recipe below) to cleanse the energy of my home at the change of seasons, with additional energy clearing done any time I feel that the energy in my home needs a boost.

Clearing your space with essential oils works best when done in a mindful and calm way. It helps to set an intention for the cleansing session. You might focus on a positive or happy image while working, or simply say a short phrase like “I invite purity and positivity into this space.”

Pick a room to start in, open all the windows and doors, and set your intention. Next, starting with the corner to the right of the entry door, spray the cleansing essential oil spray into each corner of the room in a clockwise direction, with an additional spray in front of each door or window. You should finish spraying with a spray in front of the door that leads in and out of the room.

Work your way through each room of your home if you are doing a full seasonal cleanse, or just focus on the room or rooms that you feel need a boost in between full energy cleanings.

If you don’t have time to cleanse your space this way, simply diffusing one or a combination of the essential oils mentioned above will help to dispel negative energy.

Essential Oil Room Purifying Spray

You’ll Need:

  • Clean small glass spray bottle (2oz or 4oz size is best)
  • Essential oils (you can use one, two, or all three of the oils recommended above)
  • Distilled water
  • Pure witch hazel – this helps the essential oils to combine with the water

How to Make an Energy Purifying Spray:

  1. Drop essential oils into the glass spray bottle. Use about 10 drops per ounce of total spray (so, a 2oz spray bottle should have about 20 drops, while a 4oz bottle will require about 40 drops). You may use any combination of the clearing oils above, or use just one of them. Palo Santo is a very strong oil, and only a few drops are necessary for cleansing purposes – use a maximum of 5 drops in a 2oz bottle.
  2. Pour pure witch hazel into the glass spray bottle until the bottle is about ⅓ of the way full.
  3. Swirl the essential oil and witch hazel together gently to combine them.
  4. Fill the rest of the bottle with distilled water.
  5. Screw on the cap and shake well before each use. Separation of the oil and water is natural over time.
